Tom Cruise releases a video explaining the scourge of "Motion Smoothing" on HDTV sets
Cruise and Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie released a special video on the actor's Twitter explaining motion smoothing, AKA "the soap opera effect," which is designed to reduce blur in high-motion video like sports. The problem is motion smoothing makes movies look choppy and terrible. Yet many TV owners don't know this because motion smoothing is automatically turned on. Cruise and McQuarrie explained how to turn the feature off.
