Steven Yeun to lead Netflix supernatural drama series Pagans

While his son is typical, his daughter, Alice, is anything but. Wonder Man’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II calls out the “optics” of Marvel canceling Black-led projects
Wonder Man’s cancelation after its Season 2 renewal on July 30 and Mahershala Ali confirming the next day that his long-gestating Blade movie was dead have resulted in an uncomfortable pattern surrounding the studio’s Black-led projects, Abdul-Mateen tells Vanity Fair. “I think the optics are obvious,” he says. “If I’m a big business, if I’m Disney, if I’m Marvel, I don’t want to be attached to these optics. So it should be a priority to change that narrative and to do what it takes to responsibly change that narrative with quality stories, with quality resources.” Abdul-Mateen adds that he wasn’t shown evidence as to why Marvel reversed its renewal. “I was told that it had something to do with the viewership numbers,” he says. “I wasn’t told what those numbers were, but ultimately, for whatever reason it was, I think they decided that it didn’t make sense for business, and that’s the decision that we live with and we keep on marching forward.”
