The Bachelor franchise faces an overhaul now that Grant Ellis' season is over
"As the curtain closes on Season 29, The Bachelor franchise has a bad case of formula fatigue, facing a cloudy future after being rocked by a stream of misfires and controversies, including lackluster love stories, sloppy vetting, insensitive handling of contestants of color, charges of traumatizing contestants and, most recently, leadership upheaval," says the Los Angeles Times' Greg Braxton. "When it premiered in 2002, the reality dating series was considered a novel concept, attracting millions of viewers at its peak. But despite maintaining a loyal base of Bachelor Nation fans during its more than two decades on air, the franchise has failed to keep pace with cultural shifts and fast-moving social trends. Now, in the wake of a streaming revolution which has transformed how we watch television, and a new stable of provocative and sexy competitors, the show has been bounced from the ranks of elite reality series." TV news anchors avoided saying Gulf of Mexico while covering the long-stranded NASA astronauts splashdown
Status' Oliver Darcy noticed "not one of the outlets could muster the courage to simply refer to it as the Gulf of Mexico, the water feature’s name since the 16th century" following President Trump's executive order calling it "Gulf of America.” As Darcy wrote, “every channel danced around what precisely to call the body of water they splashed into. Instead, television news organizations tied themselves in knots, performing linguistic gymnastics to stay out of Donald Trump’s crosshairs, while also tiptoeing around audiences who would have surely been incensed to see them bend the knee and call it the 'Gulf of America.'"
