Mr. & Mrs. Smith renewed for Season 2, but Donald Glover and Maya Erskine may not return
Amazon Prime Video this morning formally ordered a second season of the acclaimed spy drama starring Glover and Erskine without confirming casting. Variety's Joe Otterson reports "that Season 1 stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are not expected to return to star in Season 2. Glover is still credited as a co-creator and executive producer on the series alongside Francesca Sloane, who will return as showrunner. In addition, Glover recently announced that he will go on a world tour as Childish Gambino beginning in August through February 2025. Amazon declined to comment on whether or not Glover and Erskine would return. Reps for Glover and Erskine did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment." As TV Insider notes, Mr. & Mrs. Smith's ended its first season with a cliffhanger. In announcing the renewal, Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, said: "We are proud to bring you another season filled with unforgettable journeys and new adventures.”
Nicolas Cage to star in Spider-Man Noir series for Amazon Prime Video and MGM+
The Oscar-winning actor will star in the series that "revolves around an aging and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero." Cage previously voiced Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Noir will be led by showrunners Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot. Like Amazon's Silk: Spider Society, Noir will first premiere on the Amazon-owned MGM+ before joining Prime Video.
Amazon greenlights Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Tomb Raider series adaptation
The Fleabag creator and star is writing the Tomb Raider series, but no cast has been set. “If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode," Waller-Bridge said at Amazon's upfront presentation. "Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all."
The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 delayed to summer 2025 with an supersized 11 episodes
The Lola Tung-led YA hit’s third season order is going up from the originally ordered 10 episodes. That’s up from the seven-episode Season 1 and the eight-episode Season 2.
The Boys earns an early Season 5 renewal
Amazon Prime Video has picked up a fifth season of the acclaimed superhero drama ahead of its Season 4 premiere on June 13. “’The Boys’ could be the best job I’ll ever have. What other show allows me to write about politics, capitalism, family and exploding genitalia, though not in that order?” The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke said in a statement. “The cast and crew are deeply grateful to Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios for the opportunity to tell this story for another season. My only problem is that since this year promises to be free of any conflict or misinformation, we’re not sure what to write about.”
Jeopardy! is expanding to streaming with Pop Culture Jeopardy! on Amazon Prime Video
The first streaming version of Jeopardy! "will differ somewhat from the classic game in that three-person teams will compete against one another rather than individual players," according to The Hollywood Reporter. "The show will keep the classic answer-and-question format, however, and its categories will cover music, movies, sports and all elements of popular culture." Jeopardy! executive producer will helm Pop Culture Jeopardy! A host and premiere date will be announced at a later date.
Amazon Prime Video announces two Amazon shopping-themed game shows: J.B. Smoove’s Buy It Now and Nick Cannon’s holiday Wish List Games
Buy It Now, based on the British game show of the same name, will be connected to Amazon's "Buy It Now" feature. "In this case, entrepreneurs try to place their products on the function — if they can convince a live studio audience of 100 customers and a panel of business experts," per Variety. "Viewers will be able to shop the products featured on the show directly from their devices as they watch. Winners will receive a cash prize 'based on their pitch, ingenuity, and creativity.'" Wish List Games, meanwhile, "features contestants playing for items on their Amazon wish list, up to $25,000. They’ll play various games, leading to a final round where the winning contestant plays to win a prize for everyone in the audience." Wish List Games will air during the holiday season.
Aldis Hodge-led Cross unveils a teaser as Amazon confirms its Season 2 renewal
Based on James Patterson’s bestselling book series, Cross is a twisted thriller starring Hodge as Alex Cross, "a detective and forensic psychologist, uniquely capable of digging into the psyches of killers and their victims, to identify — and ultimately capture — the murderers." Amazon has yet to announce a premiere date for Cross.
Nielsen: Disney accounts for the most viewing across cable, broadcast and streaming
On Tuesday, Nielsen unveiled The Media Distributor Gauge that encompasses viewership across broadcast, streaming and cable. The Walt Disney Company ranks No. 1 with 11.5% share of viewership, followed by No. 2 YouTube with 9.6%, No. 3 NBC Universal with 8.9%, No. 4 Paramount Global with 8.8%, No. 5 Warner Bros. Discovery with 8.1%, No. 6 Netflix with 7.6%, No. 7 Fox with 6.1 and No. 8 Amazon Prime Video with 3.2%.
Comcast to launch a Peacock-Netflix-Apple TV+ bundle at a deep discount
Dubbed StreamSaver, the bundle will be available to all Comcast broadband, TV and mobile customers, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said Tuesday. The three streaming services, Peacock, Netflix and Apple TV+, will “come at a vastly reduced price to anything available today,” Roberts said, without revealing any pricing details.
