TruTV is being overhauled with nightly sports programming
The "zombie" cable channel that has become known in recent years for endless reruns of Impractical Jokers and World's Dumbest will be revamped with TNT Sports on TruTV starting next Monday, featuring a mix of live sports, original sports programming and ancillary sports content. "In doing so, Warner no doubt hopes to create new value where there has only been a little," reports Variety's Brian Steinberg. "A new sports schedule would likely draw broader viewership and new ad dollars to the network, and might even spur cable distributors to accord the outlet more value in future carriage contracts. The sports schedule will not consist only of simulcasts of NHL, MLB and NBA matchups that typically turn up on the company’s flagship TBS and TNT cable networks. Warner intends to air new 'alterna-casts' that target different audiences; a new live half-hour 'TNT Sports Update' each evening at 6 p.m.; and a new weekly program based on the social-media driven clip showcase 'House of Highlights.'" Meghan Markle and Geena Davis team to change the underrepresented portrayals of moms on TV
On Thursday, Moms First, a charity partner of Markle's Archewell Foundation, and the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media shared the results of a study that shows how those portrayals don’t always reflect reality, and argues that a change is necessary if we want to shift public attitudes and policy, according to Vanity Fair's Erin Vanderhoff. "The study, funded by the Archewell Foundation, found that though TV moms have become slightly more diverse, they are still underrepresented as earners and are still largely young, white, and thin. In 2022, when a couple with kids under 18 had a clear breadwinner, they were male 86.5% of the time. The study found that childcare and the realities of keeping a house running are largely erased." Davis said she was surprised by how ‘dated’ the various portrayals of TV moms seemed. “The representation of motherhood seemed like such a throwback,” she said. “It didn’t reflect modern reality anywhere near as closely as I had hoped or imagined.”

Steve Lawrence dies: Emmy-winning crooner was 88
The creamy-voiced pop crooner who popularized the standards “Go Away Little Girl” and “I’ve Gotta Be Me” and formed the crowd-pleasing act Steve and Eydie with his wife, Eydie Gormé, for more than five decades, died Thursday of complications from Alzheimer’s disease, his son announced. "Often billed as 'Steve and Eydie,' Mr. Lawrence and his wife were a ubiquitous presence on records, television variety shows and in nightclubs from Las Vegas to the Catskills," says Terence McArdle in Lawrence's Washington Post obituary. "Mr. Lawrence, with his boyish good looks and self-assured grin, and Gormé, with her raven bouffant and beaded, feathered dresses, projected an appealing playfulness. They would finish each other’s sentences and rib each other in their sharp-tongued repartee. In their later years, Steve and Eydie were regarded as the last of the ‘tux and gown’ acts, staunch interpreters of popular standards who eschewed rock and contemporary popular music. Their TV specials, such as their Emmy Award-winning Steve & Eydie Celebrate Irving Berlin in 1978, were often songbook-themed."
