NCIS boss on celebrating 500 episodes: The show may outlive me
The CBS police procedural series, a spinoff of JAG that premiered in fall 2003, tonight celebrates its 500th episode. Showrunner Steven D. Binder thinks the show may yet outlive him, and maybe anyone else currently involved. ”I know this sounds like hubris,” he tells Variety, “but if the sun comes up every day for 20 years, you just feel like there’s a good chance it’s gonna come up tomorrow! And that’s sort of how I feel about the show. It’s not even an adjudication of quality or judgment or how awesome our numbers are or how much people love it. It’s just, literally, there has always been NCIS, it feels like there’s always going to be NCIS,’ and I don’t see any reason why that’s gonna change. Other than the utter and complete total collapse of the network broadcast business model. Other than that.”

Netflix source denies comedian Mark Normand’s claim an executive called Muslims “dangerous people”
On his Tuesdays with Stories! podcast, Normand said executives, during a conference call, at first said he should cut a joke about Muslim people from his upcoming Mark Normand: None Too Pleased standup special to avoid “death threats.” Normand then said the Netflix executives backpedaled and insisted that he not use the joke to promote the special. “They said, ‘We’ve got to get it off socials … socials is where all the shit starts,’” said Normand, who added that he got an executive to agree to say that Muslims are “dangerous people.” According to The Hollywood Reporter’s James Hibberd, “a Netflix source strongly denies most components of Normand’s story. The kernel of truth, the source said, is ‘we advised him that we’re a global company and to be careful with the clips and jokes he used to promote the special on his own social channels.’ But the source says the idea that a Netflix executive would portray Muslims as a dangerous threat on a conference call, let alone verbally agree with Normand that they’re a ‘dangerous people,’ is ‘not true, not correct, completely false.’ What’s more, the source says Normand wasn’t even on the call, only his reps. So the idea of a back-and-forth dialogue between Normand and the executives didn’t happen (’It’s an embellishment’).”
CNN’s Kara Swisher vows to leave the network if Paramount takes over: “I’m not working for you hacks”
The tech journalist, star of the upcoming CNN docuseries Kara Swisher Wants to Live Forever, expressed her thoughts on a David Ellison takeover Monday at Syracuse University. “On some level, I don’t have to because I’ve created my own media organization where I make a lot of money,” she said. “So I don’t have to. And so for me stand up to say, I’m not working for you hacks, I’m just not doing it, and it’s not worth it to me. Especially in a business, television, which is the audiences are going like this and aging like this. So, I do a lot better direct to consumer kind of thing. And so it just doesn’t hurt me because I can wander over to MS if I feel like having a television, I can wander anywhere else. But it doesn’t matter because I reach, right now, Pivot has a bigger demo in the 25-to-45 range than all the cable networks in prime time, right?”

The city is a character unto itself in the series, and it was important to Charman that the leads understood that as well.
