Donald Sutherland dies: The Emmy-winning iconic actor was 88
Actor Kiefer Sutherland, one of Donald Sutherland's five children, announced the news of his father's death Thursday on social media. "With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away," said Kiefer Sutherland. "I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived." The Canadian-born actor, who never was nominated for an Oscar but was presented with an honorary statuette in November 2017, is best known for roles including anti-Establishment Army medic Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce in the 1970 movie M*A*S*H, private eye in 1971's Klute and despotic President Snow in The Hunger Games. While Donald Sutherland is celebrated for his movie roles, he also had a prolific TV career, starring on shows including Commander in Chief (portraying the speaker of the House), Dirty Sexy Money (as the family patriarch), The Pillars of Earth, Crossing Lines, Trust, The Undoing, Swimming with Sharks and, just last year, as a judge on Lawman: Bass Reeves. Sutherland earned two Emmy nominations: for the 2006 Lifetime miniseries Human Trafficking and for the 1995 HBO TV movie Citizen X. He won his only Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Special for Citizen X. ALSO: Ron Howard, Henry Winkler and more lead tributes to Donald Sutherland.

"The series will also weave in the “heartrending stories of his mostly gay victims; exploring the grief, guilt and trauma of their families and friends; and exposing the systemic failures, missed opportunities and societal prejudices that fueled his reign of terror."
