Teri Garr dies: Beloved comedic actress and Letterman fave was 79
Garr, the "alternately shy and sassy blond actress whose little-girl voice, deadpan comic timing, expressive eyes and cinematic bravery in the face of seemingly crazy male characters made her a star of 1970s and ’80s movies and earned her an Oscar nomination for her role in Tootsie, died Tuesday from complications of multiple sclerosis," Anita Gates writes in the actress' The New York Times obituary. Garr was first diagnosed with MS in 1999 and made her condition public in 2002. While Garr was best known for her films including Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Young Frankenstein and Tootsie, she was also fondly remembered as a favorite guest on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show and David Letterman's Late Night and The Late Show. Letterman archivist Don Giller has posted a "collection" of nearly 9 hours of David Letterman's interviews with Teri Garr, spanning from 1982 to 2008. "Her frequent, flirty visits — more than two dozens over the show’s 11 years — were comic gold, with a nearly blushing David Letterman often barely able to contain his glee," Erik Pederson says in Garr's Deadline obituary. "She also appeared on David Letterman’s 2nd Annual Holiday Film Festival in 1986 and later guested on his CBS follow-up show Late Show with David Letterman about a half-dozen times from 1993-2008." “Dave reminded me of my older brothers; he was always trying to get my goat, and he usually succeeded,” Garr wrote in her memoir. Letterman's social media accounts honored Teri Garr, posting: "Remembering one of our all-time favorite guests." Garr was among the final two weeks of guests on Carson's Tonight Show in May 1992. Garr also hosted SNL three times, in 1980, 1983 and 1985. Additionally, Garr had numerous TV guest roles, including The Andy Griffith Show, Star Trek, That Girl, The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, M*A*S*H, The Bob Newhart Show, The Odd Couple, Maude, Hunter, Tales from the Crypt, The Larry Sanders Show, Murphy Brown, Frasier, Law & Order: SVU and Felicity. She also starred with Delta Burke and Patricia Heaton on the short-lived 1995 CBS sitcom Women of the House, a Designing Women spinoff from Linda Bloodworth-Thomason. Garr also starred in 1993-1994 CBS sitcom Good Advice alongside Shelley Long and Treat Williams. But Garr is perhaps best known to younger viewers for her three episodes on Friends as the estranged birth mother of Lisa Kudrow’s Phoebe Buffay. Hollywood paid tribute to Garr, with her Mr. Mom co-star Michael Keaton writing on Instagram: "this is a day i feared and knew was coming. Forget about how great she was as an actress and comedienne. she was a wonderful woman. not just great to work with but great to be around. AND go back and watch her comedic work-Man, was she great!! RIP girl.” ALSO: Read Teri Garr’s scathing/illuminating 2008 interview with The A.V. Club.
Presumed Innocent Season 2 will have a female lead
"Season 1 was based on Scott Turow’s bestselling novel of the same name but, as Deadline pointed out at the time of the renewal, there was no obvious path to continue the series from Turow’s body of work," reports Deadline's Nellie Andreeva. "Season 2 of the show, executive produced by David E. Kelley, J.J. Abrams and Season 1 star Jake Gyllenhaal and co-exec produced by Turow, is taking a completely different path with a female lead, Leila Reynolds, succeeding Gyllenhaal’s Rusty Sabich." Andreeva reports that Presumed Innocent is expected to become an anthology series with Season 2 inspired by Dissection of a Murder, the upcoming debut legal thriller by Jo Murray that is scheduled to be released in spring 2026. According to Andreeva, "the book "follows Leila Reynolds who has just been handed her first murder case. She’s way out of her depth but the defendant only wants her – and to make matters worse, her husband is the prosecutor. Soon Leila is fighting to keep her own secrets buried too."
Andrea Mitchell's MSNBC show Andrea Mitchell Reports will end in early 2025
The veteran journalist, one of the longest-serving MSNBC personalities, is expected to retain her roles as NBC News‘ chief Washington correspondent and chief foreign affairs correspondent. But Mitchell will take up other, broader assignments when she leaves Andrea Mitchell Reports. “After 16 years of being in the anchor chair every day, I want time to do more of what I love the most: more connecting, listening and reporting in the field, especially as whoever is elected next week is going to undertake the monumental task of handling two foreign wars and the political divisions here at home," Mitchell said on her show Tuesday.

Only Murders in the Building boss teases Season 5 addition
“I think she’s the great tease at the end of the finale and a little bit of an intriguing bump forward,” co-creator John Hoffman tells Deadline of the actress who appeared near the end of the Season 4 finale. “She’s an extension of the little news report in Episode 9 that Mabel makes note of at the hospital. Ryan Girdusky is a far-right Project 2025 advisor: How did he end up on CNN NewsNight?
CNN banned Girdusky last night for making an offensive on-air comment directed at Mehdi Hasan that he hoped the left-leaning commentator’s “beeper wouldn’t go off." "But how did Girdusky end up on air in the first place?" asks The New Republic's Edith Olmsted. "Notably, Girdusky isn’t just a conservative; he’s far right. Girdusky previously wrote for notorious neo-Nazi Richard Spencer, according to posts on Spencer’s X accounts. Girdusky also once laughed about being Islamophobic with Gavin McInnes, the founder of the Proud Boys, a far-right neofascist group."
