Peter Marshall, Emmy-winning host of The Hollywood Squares, dies at 98
Marshall, who died Thursday, was an actor, singer and comedian who brought his authoritative baritone to the original NBC version of The Hollywood Squares, which he earned four Daytime Emmys hosting from 1966 to 1981. As The Hollywood Squares host, Marshall "coaxed cheeky rejoinders from celebrities like Burt Reynolds, Mel Brooks, Joan Rivers and Paul Lynde," says Daniel E. Slotnik in Marshall's New York Times obituary, adding: “Mr. Marshall would ask the star inside it a question, and the star would usually respond with a quip — a zinger, in the show’s parlance — before giving a serious answer. The contestant would then tell Mr. Marshall whether the star had answered correctly, and the square would be won if the contestant was right. The first contestant to complete a line won the game; the first to win two games won cash and prizes. The center square was reserved for the funniest celebrity; the comedian Paul Lynde occupied it for much of the show’s run." Marshall, who maintained a Twitter/X account, spoke about Lynde and fellow Hollywood Squares regular Charles Nelson Reilly in a recent New York Times article on groundbreaking gay comedians. As Slotnik notes, "The Hollywood Squares was wildly popular throughout the late 1960s and ’70s, with episodes syndicated in prime time for virtually all of the ’70s. But in 1976, NBC switched the show’s daytime time slot, which hurt ratings. After four moves in as many years, NBC canceled the show in 1980 to make room for an experimental daytime program, The David Letterman Show. Mr. Letterman’s show proved unpopular with daytime audiences and was soon canceled. Mr. Marshall did not return to NBC, but he continued to host the syndicated Hollywood Squares for a year before it left the air." ALSO: Watch Peter Marshall's Pioneers of Television interview.
Five people arrested in Matthew Perry's death, including two doctors, his assistant and a dealer known as "Ketamine Queen"
Federal authorities have filed drug charges against five individuals in connection with the Oct. 28, 2023 death of the former Friends star. The two lead defendants are Jasveen Sangha, known as the “Ketamine Queen,” and Salvador Plasencia, nicknamed “Dr. P,” according to the Los Angeles Times. Both are facing conspiracy to distribute ketamine, distribution of the drug resulting in death, possession with intent to distribute and altering and falsifying records related to a federal investigation, among other charges, according to an indictment unsealed Thursday. U.S. Atty. Martin Estrada said the defendants “took advantage of Mr. Perry’s addiction to enrich themselves. These defendants were more interested in profiting off Mr. Perry than caring about his well being." Meanwhile, the Department of Justice says Perry's live-in assistant Kenneth Iwamasa has already pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine causing death. The DOJ says Iwamasa "repeatedly" injected Perry with ketamine "without medical training," including on the day of Perry's death. Grey’s Anatomy bringing back Kali Rocha for the first time in 17 years
Rocha, who recurred on the ABC medical drama for its second, third and fourth seasons, will reprise her Dr. Sydney Heron character, last seen in November 2007. "In what is likely a record-long gap for a character coming back to an ongoing series, Rocha is set to do three episodes in the upcoming 21st season of Grey’s Anatomy, setting up a Sydney-Bailey reunion and giving fans an update on how Sydney is doing almost two decades after we last saw her," says Deadline's Nellie Andreeva. "Sydney was first introduced in Episode 15 of Grey’s second season as a perky fourth-year resident who filled in for Bailey (Chandra Wilson) overseeing the interns while she was on maternity leave. Rocha came back as a recurring the following season, appearing in five episodes, and was brought back in Season 4 for two additional episodes, making the last of her eight guest stints on the show in Episode 8, which aired in November (2007). Sydney immediately made an impression on the interns with her eternal optimism and 'heal with love' philosophy, which she had adopted after suffering a nervous breakdown over losing a patient and taking a break from medicine."
ESPN fires NFL coverage stars Sam Ponder and Robert Griffin III
Ponder, who has hosted Sunday NFL Countdown since 2017, and Griffin, who was already demoted from his Monday Night Countdown analyst role, have been abruptly dropped by the network. "Ponder only worked in the prestigious role of host NFL Countdown, but was, for the most part, off for the rest of the year. ESPN generally reserves these types of schedules for the Joe Bucks, Troy Aikmans and Peyton Mannings of its world," says The Athletic's Andrew Marchand, adding: "Griffin, who as recently as last year had been viewed as a rising star at ESPN, had two years remaining on his deal. He was hired three years ago after gaining interest from Fox Sports and ESPN. At the time, sources at both networks raved about what they described as one of the best auditions they had ever seen." Some right-wingers have questioned Ponder's firing because she has been known for denouncing trans athletes. Ponder recently weighed in on the Imane Khelif controversy. Last year, USA Today sports columnist Nancy Armour accused Ponder of dealing in “bigotry.” ”Don’t be fooled by the people who screech about ‘fairness’ to cloak their bigotry toward transgender girls and women, the transgender girls and women who have the audacity to want to play sports, in particular,” Armour wrote of Ponder. “This is, and always was, about hate, fear and ignorance.”
