Star Trek: Discovery finds its Spock: Ethan Peck
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
Peck, the grandson of Hollywood icon Gregory Peck and a former star of ABC Family sitcom 10 Things I Hate About You, has been tapped to play the half-human, half-Vulcan science officer of the USS Enterprise on Season 2 of the CBS All Access series. Creator and showrunner Alex Kurtzman said of the casting: "Through 52 years of television and film, a parallel universe and a mirror universe, Mr. Spock remains the only member of the original bridge crew to span every era of Star Trek. The great Leonard Nimoy, then the brilliant Zachary Quinto, brought incomparable humanity to a character forever torn between logic and emotion. We searched for months for an actor who would, like them, bring his own interpretation to the role. An actor who would, like them, effortlessly embody Spock’s greatest qualities, beyond obvious logic: empathy, intuition, compassion, confusion and yearning. Ethan Peck walked into the room inhabiting all of these qualities, aware of his daunting responsibility to Leonard, Zack and the fans, and ready to confront the challenge in the service of protecting and expanding on Spock’s legacy. In that spirit, we’re thrilled to welcome him to the family." ALSO: Peck once played a younger version of Ashton Kutcher's That '70s Show character.

Jordan Peele was "terrified" of rebooting The Twilight Zone -- and isn't sure he'll assume the on-camera Rod Serling role
“I was terrified,” Peele tells Variety. “Why would I ever jump into the most established, pristine shoes in all of the genre? I could rip Twilight Zone off and call it something different and not be compared to Rod Serling. So I stepped away from it. And then several months later I got another call" from CBS Television Studios. According to Variety, "Peele has resisted — but not ruled out — stepping into Serling’s on-camera presenter role for the revival. The new series will have someone in that job, speaking directly into camera, teeing up each episode. But Peele worries that his face is too associated with comedy, that his presence would undermine the serious work he’s putting in to do right by Serling’s legacy."
Stephen Colbert: We had to take "extraodinary" steps to get a diverse writers' room
Source: The Cut
The Late Show host was "frustrated" with the challenge of making his writing staff diverse, until he realized the process of finding diverse writers was flawed. As he recounted to The New York Times, “It wasn’t until we said, no please, don’t send us anyone but women. Because we would say, you know it’s very important, we want writers of color, we want women, and you would get 150 packets and there would be eight women. And we’re like, ‘God, that’s so frustrating.’ Until I said no, only women, and then I got 87 women.” He added: "We realized we had to take an extraordinary step to get an extraordinary room. And now it’s half, you know, white guys and half either women or writers of color.”
