Comedian James Adomian takes SNL to task for its lack of gay male cast members, accuses the show of stealing jokes
Source: The Daily Beast
Saturday Night Live hasn't had an openly gay male full-fledged cast member since Terry Sweeney became the first and only one for one season, from 1985 to 1986. (Kate McKinnon is only the second out cast member.) “It would be nice if they put a gay man on camera on that show,” says Adomian, who became famous in recent years for playing Bernie Sanders on stage with a pre-President Show Anthony Atamanuik as Donald Trump. “I’ve been out of the closet the whole time since I auditioned 13 years ago. You would think that they would have tried to put someone else on that was a gay man. It’s about time.” He also accuses SNL of ripping off jokes from casting tapes. “That’s a scandal that’s going to break open sooner or later, I guess. SNL is notorious for passing around audition tapes," he says. "It happened to me. It happened to Anthony. It’s happened to other people I know.”

Comedy Central sees a future for both The President Show and The Opposition with Jordan Klepper
“We’re working that out,” Comedy Central president Kent Alterman said of Anthony Atamanuik’s weekly Trump parody. “We’ll have something soon.” As for Klepper, Alterman said. What pleased us the most was how formed it was at the outset, knowing it’s not going to stay fixed. It’s just going to keep evolving. We believe in Jordan, and we’re happy with him out of the gate.”

In 2017, Donald Trump proved to be bad for comedy
The problem is mocking Trump is “both incredibly easy and incredibly challenging,” says Jesse David Fox. From sitcoms to late-night, there was a “tremendous amount of comedy focused on Trump” in 2017 — and much of it was bad, says Fox. “It’s not that all comedy made about Trump this year has been bad, but that his administration has resulted in comedians making worse comedy than they would have otherwise,” he adds. “That’s because Trump is a bad subject for comedy: He’s shallow and played out, and already what people expect from the comedy about him is bad.” To make matters worse, Fox says, “Trump does something mockable at an unprecedented clip, but it’s mostly rooted in the same toxic psychology he’s always had.” Fox also notes that “Trump and the culture around him have created a terrible atmosphere for risk-taking,” so you end up getting the same old jokes. And if you try to avoid Trump altogether, like the South Park guys did, you are still criticized for dodging real-life. Fox does credit Anthony Atamanuik of Comedy Central’s The President Show for being the lone refreshing take on Trump, who “goes down a rabbit hotel of his psyche, revealing a hidden-in-plain-sight existential despair.”

The President Show’s Anthony Atamanuik would rather have Trump out of office than keep his job
Source: Hollywood Life
“Let’s say he is impeached; it’s a year and a half process. I’d be fine,” says the Trump impersonator. “I did a lot of work before I did this, I’m sure I’ll do a lot after. We would love nothing more than for him to be gone.”

Anthony Atamanuik on President Show's Trump mockery: Our job might be tougher than what SNL does
Atamanuik thinks he works just as hard as his late-night contemporaries, even though his show only runs 30 minutes once a week. “There is no luxury in what we do. It is, I would argue, probably more difficult than what Saturday Night Live does,” he says. “We have to fill 21 minutes and 15 seconds, and it has to be relevant and interesting, with one of the most despicable characters on the landscape today.” ALSO: Anthony Scaramucci wants to hang with Mario Cantone, his President Show impersonator.

How The President Show is able to predict every President Trump controversy
Source: Vanity Fair
Anthony Atamanuik says his nearly two years of studying Donald Trump, he came up with a predictive model, which helped him “learn how (Trump) thinks, as opposed to trying to duplicate what he says.” He adds: “Like an infection, it moved from me to all the writers, and we’re all diseased now.” PLUS: Watch a roundup of The President’s Show accurate predictions.
