Hugh Laurie reunites with Veep creator to play an HBO space captain
Armando Iannucci is returning to HBO with the space comedy pilot Avenue 5, and he's bringing Veep veteran Laurie with him. Laurie will play Ryan Clark, “the charming and in-control American Captain of Avenue 5" on the drama that HBO describes as “a comedy, set in the future, mostly in space.” Laurie's connection with Iannucci goes beyond playing Vice President Frank on Veep. Laurie is also starring in the Iannucci-directed movie The Personal History of David Copperfield, which will be released next year. Veep creator won’t return for the final season, says he’s done with political satire in wake of Trump
“I’m kind of relieved, I really am,” Armando Iannucci says of not having to do political satire while Donald Trump is president. “What can you do and say that hasn’t already been said and done by him? Personally, I just find it difficult to be funny about him,” he adds. “I can only be frustrated and flabbergasted by him. Outraged.” As for not returning to Veep, which he still executive produces, Iannucci says, “I’m happy that I left it in a good place and I don’t want to tamper with it.”
