Busy Philipps' Busy Tonight is still effectively an enigma after its first week
Source: The Ringer
"Busy Tonight is a positivity-only zone and so ends up communicating little at all. It’s not antithetical to self-care to have standards," says Daniel D'Addario, adding: "We know she generally likes popular things and wants to give her viewer a smooth place to land before bed. But talk demands a crystal-clear point-of-view, and Busy Tonight has yet to find that, making its endless references to the language of self-help and its production excesses like the nightly lullaby feel like the antic search for a personality, not the expression of one. Some things about television shows we’ve seen before are worth keeping." ALSO: Nobody on Busy Tonight knows what to do with his or her body yet.

Why Busy Philipps decided to do a talk show, and why Tina Fey came on board as executive producer
Source: The New York Times
“Years ago, people had floated the idea of me doing a talk show, and I always sort of railed against it because I felt like I’m an actor, and that’s what I love,” says the former Cougar Town and Freaks and Geeks star, who has found a second wind on her sitcom-like Instagram Stories. But at some point, she said, “you have to lean into” what you’re good at. “Not that I’m not good at acting. I think I am, but it’s just so hard to do," says Philipps, whose four-night-a-week E! talk show Busy Tonight launches Sunday. Fey came on board after casting her on an unsuccessful sitcom project last year. Phillips is “so warm and instantly likable and refreshing when you talk to her,” Fey said. “I always sort of gravitate toward things that I myself would be interested in as a viewer. I felt like her presence is funny, natural and positive in a way — she’s not shying away from talking about difficult things in her life, or in the world.”

Busy Philipps is disappointed her book tour has become all about James Franco
Source: The Mary Sue
Philipps said last night on Watch What Happens Live she was surprised how many headlines were devoted to her allegation that Franco pushed her on the set of Freaks and Geeks, especially since she recounted the same story in 2016 on the very same Bravo late-night show. Philipps said she expected the Franco story to grab headlines, but she didn't expect it to overshadow her book tour. "I’m a woman in this industry who wrote a very personal book ... and the headlines were all about a man," Philipps said.

Busy Philipps wants to make it clear that James Franco apologized for allegedly shoving her to the ground on Freaks and Geeks
Source: USA Today
On Instagram, Phillips addressed the reports of her writing about Franco bullying her in her upcoming memoir, This Will Only Hurt A Little, pointing out that "my book is 308 pages, not one paragraph. The Franco story is used to illustrate a larger point about the way women are treated in this business and in life. There are no 'allegations' and no 'accusations'. It's a story that I have been telling for years. James apologized. I accepted. And I still get to tell it because it f*cking happened to me.” In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Philipps said: "It wasn't even outrageous. At the time, 19 and with my first professional acting job, I was under the impression that this was just the way things were. James and I have talked about it over the years. At one point he apologized to me. I was always acutely aware of my expendability, and so I felt I needed to never complain, always show up on time and not be difficult. If someone else was being difficult, it was my job to be the easy one or figure out a way to soothe the situation."

Busy Philipps' memoir details how "f*cking bully" James Franco threw her to the ground on the Freaks and Geeks set
Philipps has mentioned Franco shoving her to the ground before, in 2016 on Andy Cohen's Watch What Happens Live. But in her forthcoming memoir, Phillips details the incident. According to a report in Radar Online , Philipps writes that she was directed to gently hit Franco in the chest while delivering a line, which prompted him to break character. “He grabbed both my arms and screamed in my face, ‘DON’T EVER TOUCH ME AGAIN!’” she writes in the book. “And he threw me to the ground. Flat on my back. Wind knocked out of me.” She writes that Franco apologized the next day after being ordered to do so by the director and producers. Phillips' book, titled This Will Only Hurt a Little, comes out Oct. 16,

Busy Philipps on her E! talk show: "I bring something different to the table in my perspective so the opening will reflect that"

"We should know by the end of this month if we’re doing a three-night a week show or if E! will start us out at one-night per week," she says of the upcoming Busy Tonight. "My preference is really three nights per week to get a rhythm going. … We will be doing the traditional opening monologue a bit differently. It works for stand-ups and certainly everyone on Twitter is doing those sort of monologue jokes all day long. I bring something different to the table in my perspective so the opening will reflect that. I also just like talking, in case you can’t tell."
