Should Deal or No Deal still have briefcase models in the #MeToo era?
Source: The New York Times
The Howie Mandel-hosted game show returned this week on CNBC after a nearly 10-year hiatus. But is Deal or No Deal out of step with the times? "In 2018, as the culture continues to grapple with the way women have been disregarded and sometimes abused by Hollywood and its machers, Deal and shows like it raise an awkward question: Is this a convention whose time is up?" asks Lara Zarum. "Series like Deal encapsulate the paradox of the modern game-show modeling gig: On one hand, it offers a stiletto-heeled foot in the door for many young women who aspire to careers in entertainment — Meghan Markle and Chrissy Teigen, among others, got their starts on Deal or No Deal. Vanna White, who has been turning letters on Wheel of Fortune since 1983, has shaped that gig into a long, multifaceted career...On the other hand, it is unclear whether those advantages are worth the broader message it may communicate in the wake of #MeToo."

Howie Mandel said in May he didn't recall Meghan Markle on Deal or No Deal, but now he remembers her acting "slightly duchessy"
Mandel told E! News during the week before Markle's wedding to Prince Harry that "to be honest, I don't even remember her. I don't. I don't. I'd like to say I do and if she's watching, and she's not right?" Mandel then looked into the camera and said: "I don't remember you. I don't remember you. I've seen a lot of pictures and I don't…" Yet while speaking today at the TV press tour, Mandel spoke about Markle's brief stint as a Deal or No Deal briefcase model as if he clearly remembered her. "She was slightly duchessy," Mandel said, adding: “That speaks to who we have now and who we had then. Not everybody will have an opportunity to meet royalty, but these are all accomplished people that have something substantial. They’re not just standing there holding a case — they have careers, they have hobbies, they have families, they’re entrepreneurial."

CNBC reality TV crew that was arrested was carrying a “vacuum compression luggage” -- not a fake bomb
Reality TV producer Endemol has an explanation for why nine of its crew members were taken into custody and later released over concerns they tried to get a fake bomb through security at Newark Airport. Endemol says the crew from the upcoming show Staten Island Hustle “was producing an episode about a new product, vacuum compression luggage, which allows travelers more room for clothing and has no other intended use. Unfortunately, there appears to have been a misunderstanding, and we regret any inconvenience to TSA and other authorities on the ground for complications that may have been caused.”

CNBC reality TV crew reportedly tried to sneak a fake bomb through Newark Airport
Nine members of a reality show crew were charged and released with conspiracy to create a public alarm and other offenses. Authorities say the crew members said they were filming a show called Staten Island Hustle and wanted to see how passengers and TSA workers would react to the device made up of vacuum cleaner parts and wires. CNBC referred all questions to reality show producer Endemol. "While this process is ongoing we are unable to comment further but in the meantime, we sincerely apologize for any disruption caused," Endemol said.
