Chelsea Handler’s talk show could’ve succeeded on Hulu, which has appointment viewing
Netflix viewers are conditioned for binge releases, so Handler's talk show was not conducive to weekly appointment viewing. And having episodes released at 3 a.m. on Fridays didn't help, either. ALSO: Chelsea was just starting to find its groove.

Chelsea Handler offers “an apology on behalf of men”

In her first Chelsea episode since the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment scandal broke (taped on the same day she announced the end of her show), Handler apologized on behalf of all male sexual harassers -- after naming all the celebrity men accused of sexual abuse. “We’re sorry for using our positions of power to sexually assault and harass women,” Handler said. “We’re sorry that we’re not the only ones guilty of this in our industry, or the only industry that has this problem.” ALSO: Female animators demand an end to sexual harassment in an old letter signed with 217 signatures.

Chelsea Handler’s talk show demise is a rare victory of traditional TV over the internet
“The show simply never generated much buzz,” Andrew Wallenstein says of Chelsea. “Netflix hasn’t shared anything in the way of audience data, but it presumably wasn’t good considering the show went from three episodes per week to just one midway through its run.” As Wallenstein points out, Chelsea’s failure is even more puzzling as late-night talk shows appear to be thriving in the Trump era, from Trevor Noah to Samantha Bee to the network hosts. “Handler has demonstrated a knack for drawing attention to herself with political commentary on social media, where she’s particularly adept, and in public appearances,” says Wallenstein. “But that didn’t translate to her talk show, which felt as if it was hermetically sealed within the Netflix world in a way that didn’t resonate in the larger media landscape. It’s not unlike the way Howard Stern’s public profile seemed to diminish when he made the switch from terrestrial radio to Sirius XM.” ALSO: Chelsea was "never a perfect show, but it was a trailblazing experiment."

Netflix cancels Chelsea Handler’s late-night talk show after two seasons
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
Chelsea, Netflix’s first talk show, failed to gain traction in the crowded late-night space. But Handler will continue to work with Netflix with an original documentary on the current political landscape. Handler announced the news in a lengthy Twitter message, saying that instead of doing her show, she plans to be more active on the national level in political causes. “My goal is to be better informed, raise my voice, and participate in a more meaningful way,” she writes. Chelsea will continue airing new episodes until the end of the year.
