Colton's appearance on the NBC daytime show was "the most Underwood has ever spoken, ever—perhaps this is the result of some media training or maybe ABC has finally allowed him to talk—my bar is very low, but for the first time since his Bachelor crowning, I’m kind of excited to at least attempt to watch the new season," says Maria Sherman.

Colton briefly got to know three of the women who will be vying for his affection in a game of "Know or Go." Colton also spoke to Ellen DeGeneres about being the first virgin Bachelor. "The show is known for being romantic and for being intimate and I think the stigma around virginity is that you're not romantic or sexual," he said. "So that's an interesting topic that, if ABC was ready, it would be something to showcase."

Chris Harrison: We picked Colton Underwood as The Bachelor simply because he "gives us what we felt was the best TV"
"And that’s what we’re doing; we’re trying to entertain, we’re trying to tell a story,” he says. Harrison adds: “I know people are mad, and they’re right to be mad because Jason or Blake or whoever are great people. They are and they do deserve love, and so I’m glad that people are upset. They just have to remember why they’re upset and that Colton’s a good guy, too. He’s gonna be a great Bachelor.”

ABC may have selected Colton Underwood because he resembles past Bachelors
Colton is a bit like Nick Viall, Ben Higgins and the original "virgin" Bachelor, Sean Lowe. "The Bachelor, essentially, keeps trying to get the formula right, much like Underwood with his failed relationships," says Rebecca Farley. "The trick is to find an imminently appealing Bachelor who also very much wants to find love. A party-in-the-front, business-in-the-back kind of man. Also known as Sean Lowe, the franchise's white whale. (In this franchise, it should be said, all the whales are white.)" ALSO: Jimmy Kimmel teaches Colton the birds and the bees.

In defense of virgin Colton Underwood as The Bachelor: He's a wholesome change of pace to previous seasons
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
"He is a wholesome choice," says Jackie Strause, "and that is something this franchise could certainly use after being hit with backlash over Arie's season — when the 'kissing bandit' was criticized as the wrong lead in the #MeToo era — and Becca's cycle, which was hit with bad behavior and scandal time and again, including one contestant being convicted of sexual assault. One way to fix the franchise's vetting issues is certainly to lure more wholesome contestants with the safest pick. He's also dated someone famous outside the franchise (Aly Raisman) and has the biggest social media following of the new bunch — two checks in the "potential ratings" column for ABC."
- Colton is The Bachelor's most conservative pick yet: He'll have no problem upholding the show's quietly conservative, family-oriented values
- Why Colton's virginity won't be a big deal when it comes to fantasy suites

ABC stirs controversy with pick of Colton Underwood as the next Bachelor

“Third time’s a charm. That’s what they say, right?” The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise alum said on Good Morning America this morning after he was announced as the 23rd Bachelor and the first virgin in franchise history. Colton's selection drew the ire of Bachelor Nation thanks to his antics on The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise, which have made him seem indecisive, fame-hungry and not a guy who is genuinely looking for love. The former NFL practice squad player first became famous two years ago with a "sweet video" asking gold medal-winning Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman on a date after she competed in Rio, which led to them dating for less than a year. As Laura Bradley explains, the drama surrounding Colton isn't The Bachelor's biggest problem. "What’s more alarming," she says, "is what Colton’s selection indicates about the direction The Bachelor is taking: namely, staying the course despite flagging ratings for multiple disappointing seasons. For the past several years, the Bachelor franchise has faced a toxic combination of boring seasons—cough especially Arie cough—and scandals that range from exploitative editing choices to more alarming allegations from the set. Through it all, ratings have been falling. In choosing Colton, it appears that The Bachelor has chosen to double down. Whatever fans might think of Colton’s character, good or bad, he is clearly willing to play the producers’ game ... In truth, it’s unlikely he’ll bring anything new to the table; Colton is the kind of blonde haired, blue eyed, square jawed leading man that The Bachelor has always worshipped. Even in the face of certain future irrelevance, The Bachelor will not be changing its strategy any time soon." ALSO: Expect Colton's season to be packed with virgin jokes.

Reality Steve predicts the former NFL tight and alum of Becca Kufrin's Bachelorette season will be named the next Bachelor. The Bachelorette's Colton Underwood: Why I revealed I was a virgin on national television
“On tonight’s episode I talk about something I typically avoid talking about at all costs, but it was appropriate for me to bring up,” wrote the former NFL player (and ex-boyfriend of Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Aly Raisman) on Instagram after last night's episode was broadcast. “It’s something that I don’t talk about very often and something that only a handful of people know.”

One Bachelorette contestant's occupation is listed as "social media participant": What does that even mean?
The occupation of contestant Kamil, 30, raised eyebrows amid a cast that includes a banjoist and a colognoisseur (fragrance expert). As Twitter user MJ Franklin pointed out, Kamil is not a "social media manager" or a "social media influencer." He's a "social media participant." "Like, imagine someone asking you what your job is and you're just like '...well... I have a Twitter sooooo... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯," Franklin tweeted.
