Dan Harmon apologizes for "distasteful" 2009 baby doll rape video -- Adult Swim calls sketch "offensive" but won't reprimand him
The Rick and Morty co-creator, who deleted his Twitter account after the old video resurfaced during Comic-Con following James Gunn's firing from Disney's Guardians of the Galaxy, said in his apology: "In 2009, I made a ‘pilot’ which strove to parody the series Dexter and only succeeded in offending. I quickly realized the content was way too distasteful and took the video down immediately. Nobody should ever have to see what you saw and for that, I sincerely apologize." Adult Swim released its own statement saying, while it found the video offensive, Harmon won't be punished for the resurfaced video. “At Adult Swim, we seek out and encourage creative freedom and look to push the envelope in many ways, particularly around comedy,” the cable network said. “The offensive content of Dan’s 2009 video that recently surfaced demonstrates poor judgement and does not reflect the type of content we seek out. Dan recognized his mistake at the time and has apologized. He understands there is no place for this type of content here at Adult Swim.”

The Rick and Morty co-creator's baby doll rape video was part of a five-minute comedy pilot called Daryl that Harmon made to spoof Showtime's Dexter. Rick and Morty creators held out until Adult Swim gave them "many, many, many more seasons"
In a GQ profile of co-creator Dan Harmon, he and fellow co-creator Justin Roiland explain why the renewal took so long. Roiland said they held out for up to seven seasons' worth of episodes for their own state of mind -- so that Harmon “doesn't have to take 12 other jobs while we're working on season four." That way, Harmon could give the show the attention it deserves. ALSO: Roiland says Harmon and Rick are starting to merge in his mind.

Adult Swim gives Rick and Morty a massive 70-episode renewal
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
The 70-episode pickup is more than double the 31 episodes Rick and Morty has produced in three seasons. The renewal is part of a long-term overall deal with creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland. "Rick and Morty is truly what a modern day hit looks like across multiple screens and multiple touchpoints,” says Cartoon Network president Christina Miller. The 70-episode order will bring Rick and Morty to 101 episodes, one past the magic number for syndication. According to The Hollywood Reporter, " Rick and Morty renewal was given, but the extent of this new pact is quite unexpected. Should Roiland and Harmon maintain anything close to their current production schedule, this will keep the show on the air for as long as another decade." ALSO: The question now is, when will Rick and Morty return?

Former Community writer Megan Ganz: Why I accepted Dan Harmon’s apology for sexually harassing me
Source: The New York Times
“The most important part of the apology was its specificity,” Ganz tells The New York Times. “He gave a complete account of what he did. Not the salacious details that people focus on — was it in a bar? what time? who was there? — but the ugly little realities. He knew that I didn’t welcome his advances. He did it anyway. He treated me differently than he treated the male writers. And when people confronted him about it, he lied.” She adds: “The irony is, Dan was the only person who could wipe those doubts from my head. That’s why I was able to accept his apology. Because I felt vindicated, to others but more importantly to myself.”

Dan Harmon’s apology to former Community writer Megan Ganz was unusual in that it wasn’t damage control — it was a self-reckoning
Harmon, says Caroline Framke, “did something that few other men have done when called out on predatory, destructive behavior: He took real responsibility for his actions, dug deep into the ugliness that caused them, and pledged to do better. Whether or not he will is another question entirely. With this apology, at least, he has shown others a way to accept blame for their worst instincts — which will be crucial if anything is to change going forward.”

Dan Harmon gives a lengthy apology on his podcast for sexually harassing former Community writer Megan Ganz
“Here’s a weird one for you: Last week, I called out my former boss @danharmon for sexual harassment, and today I’m going to ask you to listen to his podcast,” Ganz tweeted this morning. “I’m not being flippant. I didn’t bring up this mess just to sweep it back under the rug. But I find myself in the odd position of having requested an apology publicly, and then having received one—a good one—also publicly. I waited 6 years for it, but you can find it 18:38 in.”

Dan Harmon apologizes for treating a female former Community writer “like garbage”
Source: Entertainment Weekly
In a Twitter exchange with writer Megan Ganz, the Community creator acknowledged his bad behavior, tweeting: “i’m filled with regret and a lot of foggy memories about abusing my position, treating you like garbage. I would feel a lot of relief if you told me there was a way to fix it. I’ll let you call the shots. Til then, at least know I know I was an awful boss and a selfish baby.” Ganz responded: "I wish my memories were foggier. I wish there was a way to fix it. It took me years to believe in my talents again, to trust a boss when he complimented me and not cringe when he asked for my number. I was afraid to be enthusiastic, knowing it might be turned against me later."

Dan Harmon is optimistic about a Community movie because high-profile Hollywood filmmakers are interested
The Russo Brothers, who directed the Community pilot and Justin Lin, who directed three episodes, may have the Hollywood clout to bring the “six seasons and a movie” dream to fruition. Harmon says Lin “in particular has always been jazzed about the idea of doing a Community movie.”
