Dancing with the Stars' casting director noticed Mirai Nagasu's "audition" comment
"I think she’s charming and great, and I loved her before she even said any of this – when she hit the triple axel," says Deena Katz, Dancing's casting director and co-executive producer. "I think she’s adorable, and I’m still really making the picks on who it is, but obviously she, Adam (Rippon), Nathan (Chen), the Shibutani’s, if I could just do a season of ice skaters, that would be fantastic because I could have filled it up just with them." Was Mirai Nagasu a "jerk" for saying her final Winter Olympics performance was a Dancing with the Stars audition?
Nagasu apologized over the weekend for her "bizarre" press conference that followed her finale at the PyeongChang Games. “I feel really, really awful about the things I said,” she told People magazine. She also explained that her Dancing comments were really about a sports psychologist telling her to focus on something else. “I used that as a distraction and I probably should have kept it to myself. … It didn’t come out the way I wanted it to,” she said. But as Justin Peters pointed out, Nagasu's comments may have come across as jerky, but they likely weren't: "Was Nagasu’s press conference jerky, or was it just guileless and naïve? I’m inclined to believe the latter," he says. "I’m sure that many Olympic athletes hope to use their newfound fame to get on TV. Olympic fame is fleeting. In a matter of weeks, most of us will have forgotten that our favorite Olympians even exist. The athletes know this, especially the ones who, like Nagasu, are nearing the ends of their careers. Nagasu is 24 years old. There won’t be another Winter Games for her. Using her platform to advocate for herself and try to get another job is smart, not jerky. "

Mirai Nagasu regarded her final Winter Olympics performance as a Dancing with the Stars audition
“I would like to be on Dancing With the Stars because I am a star,” said the figure skater, following her disappointing 10th-place finish in the individual women's event after winning bronze in the team competition early in the PyeongChang games. Nagasu had said earlier that she hoped to land on the ABC reality show. "I made history here by landing the first triple axel for a U.S. lady at the Olympics so I think that is a big deal. I hope I get more opportunities to let my personality just shine," she said, adding: "I smiled in the middle of my program, which is really rare for me. So I enjoyed myself and I thought of this as my audition for Dancing with the Stars."
