David Cassidy proved he could really act on The Partridge Family, making him the biggest star in the world for two years

“A lot of what we credit as good acting is just charisma. But here’s how you know Cassidy could act: Watch him sing,” says Amy Argetsinger. “The songs on The Partridge Family were so lame (I’m sorry, it’s true), but Cassidy owned them. He’d be fake-performing with his TV siblings — a whole passel of younger, cuter faces on the stage with him — but while they stood there basically inert with their unplugged instruments, big brother Keith Partridge was totally rocking out.” She adds, however, that Cassidy's teen heartthrob status didn't last that long, and he would have to travel the path teen idols usually follow who try to sustain their popularity. David Cassidy was a rare teen idol in a decade full of rock gods
The Partridge Family star, who died last night at age 67, “was an anomaly in his day, a rare fresh-faced teen idol breaking out in a cultural moment when generational disaffection and cultural anxieties were producing very different rock icons,” says Aja Romano. “When people think of ’70s singers, they tend to gravitate first to rougher rock icons like Mick Jagger or Sid and Nancy. Yet Cassidy, on the pop side of the ’70s, was one of the biggest artists of the decade.”
- Shaun Cassidy: “I tried to catch him of course. I always tried to catch him. But I never could. Now, I will carry him…”
- Danny Bonaduce: "I have known, loved, and admired David Cassidy for 48 out of my 58 years. He has been as kind to me as any real brother could ever be.”
- Cassidy had a “star-power that burned so bright, so fast that, despite maintaining a lifelong career in show business, it always seemed as if he was playing catch-up to that peak, chasing a comeback that could never be achieved," writes Kevin Fallon.
