Should Deal or No Deal still have briefcase models in the #MeToo era?

The Howie Mandel-hosted game show returned this week on CNBC after a nearly 10-year hiatus. But is Deal or No Deal out of step with the times? "In 2018, as the culture continues to grapple with the way women have been disregarded and sometimes abused by Hollywood and its machers, Deal and shows like it raise an awkward question: Is this a convention whose time is up?" asks Lara Zarum. "Series like Deal encapsulate the paradox of the modern game-show modeling gig: On one hand, it offers a stiletto-heeled foot in the door for many young women who aspire to careers in entertainment — Meghan Markle and Chrissy Teigen, among others, got their starts on Deal or No Deal. Vanna White, who has been turning letters on Wheel of Fortune since 1983, has shaped that gig into a long, multifaceted career...On the other hand, it is unclear whether those advantages are worth the broader message it may communicate in the wake of #MeToo."

Howie Mandel said in May he didn't recall Meghan Markle on Deal or No Deal, but now he remembers her acting "slightly duchessy"
Mandel told E! News during the week before Markle's wedding to Prince Harry that "to be honest, I don't even remember her. I don't. I don't. I'd like to say I do and if she's watching, and she's not right?" Mandel then looked into the camera and said: "I don't remember you. I don't remember you. I've seen a lot of pictures and I don't…" Yet while speaking today at the TV press tour, Mandel spoke about Markle's brief stint as a Deal or No Deal briefcase model as if he clearly remembered her. "She was slightly duchessy," Mandel said, adding: “That speaks to who we have now and who we had then. Not everybody will have an opportunity to meet royalty, but these are all accomplished people that have something substantial. They’re not just standing there holding a case — they have careers, they have hobbies, they have families, they’re entrepreneurial."

The hit game show that was broadcast on NBC from 2005 to 2009 is coming back later this year with Mandel back at the helm. “Our primetime programs, with their focus on business and money, strive to be both entertaining and instructive,” CNBC chairman Mark Hoffman said in a statement. “Shows like The Profit and Shark Tank are built around high stakes and high rewards. Those same elements live at the heart of Deal or No Deal, which is why we believe it to be a perfect fit.” Several future celebrities got their first break on Deal or No Deal as briefcase girls, including Chrissy Teigen, Meghan Markle and Real Housewives of Atlanta's Claudia Jordan.

The Suits star’s dad, Thomas Markle, worked as a director and director of photography on the Fox sitcom. "Every day after school for 10 years, I was on the set of Married with Children, which is a really funny and perverse place for a little girl in a Catholic school uniform to grow up," Meghan Markle once told Esquire. "There were a lot of times my dad would say, 'Meg, why don't you go and help with the craft services room over there? This is just a little off-color for your 11-year-old eyes.’” Amanda Bearse, who played neighbor Marcy, on Monday remembered Meghan as a quiet, respectful kid on set. “He was so supportive and just really truly a lovely, lovely man,” Bearse said of her father. “I am not one bit surprised he grew such a lovely child.”
