People's Choice Awards will have ads blended into the show when it makes its E! debut after 43 years on CBS
Sunday's People's Choice Awards will be the first-ever not to air on CBS. NBC Universal is embracing E!'s new awards show by weaving in ads throughout the ceremony. As Variety explains, "Subaru will be active during scenes shot from the awards-show red carpet. EBay will sponsor shots of what’s happening backstage. T-Mobile will sponsor a musical performance by Rita Ora, which will be live-streamed on Snapchat. E! talent will be wearing jewelry pieces from Zales. And TV watches are likely to note the use of a new ad format – NBCU dubs it 'picture in picture' – that puts an ad on the screen without completely breaking away from the program."

Busy Philipps' Busy Tonight is still effectively an enigma after its first week
Source: The Ringer
"Busy Tonight is a positivity-only zone and so ends up communicating little at all. It’s not antithetical to self-care to have standards," says Daniel D'Addario, adding: "We know she generally likes popular things and wants to give her viewer a smooth place to land before bed. But talk demands a crystal-clear point-of-view, and Busy Tonight has yet to find that, making its endless references to the language of self-help and its production excesses like the nightly lullaby feel like the antic search for a personality, not the expression of one. Some things about television shows we’ve seen before are worth keeping." ALSO: Nobody on Busy Tonight knows what to do with his or her body yet.

EJNYC star Lyric McHenry's cause of death released as a man is charged with concealing her body
Source: E! Online
The former E! reality star, who was found dead on a New York City sidewalk in the early morning hours of Aug. 14, died of an overdose of cocaine, alcohol and heroin, according to affidavit obtained by E! News. Additionally, a 29-year-old man named Alexis Meija-Ramirez was arrested and charged with concealment of a human corpse and tampering with physical evidence. The revelation of how McHenry died comes two weeks after The New York Times delved into the life of the Stanford alum, who grew up as a "privileged Hollywood daughter" in Beverly Hills to movie director and producer Doug McHenry and wardrobe stylist Jennifer McHenry. The father said he felt that the initial coverage of his daughter's death was racist, with her portrayed as a drug addict who deserved what she got. “I don’t want this to be: black girl, drugs, something funky went on, what do you expect?” he told The Times.

Why Busy Philipps decided to do a talk show, and why Tina Fey came on board as executive producer
Source: The New York Times
“Years ago, people had floated the idea of me doing a talk show, and I always sort of railed against it because I felt like I’m an actor, and that’s what I love,” says the former Cougar Town and Freaks and Geeks star, who has found a second wind on her sitcom-like Instagram Stories. But at some point, she said, “you have to lean into” what you’re good at. “Not that I’m not good at acting. I think I am, but it’s just so hard to do," says Philipps, whose four-night-a-week E! talk show Busy Tonight launches Sunday. Fey came on board after casting her on an unsuccessful sitcom project last year. Phillips is “so warm and instantly likable and refreshing when you talk to her,” Fey said. “I always sort of gravitate toward things that I myself would be interested in as a viewer. I felt like her presence is funny, natural and positive in a way — she’s not shying away from talking about difficult things in her life, or in the world.”

Is the red carpet show dying?
Source: The Atlantic
E! Live From the Red Carpet seemed to be unsure how to cover this year's Emmys red carpet. It tried to engage fans by having celebrities draw fan questions from a jar, but that didn't work. As Megan Garber notes, "it is perhaps an apt metaphor for this moment—in awards shows, in entertainment, in American culture—that red carpets don’t seem to be sure what they are anymore, or what they should be. A platform for serious conversation? An opportunity to talk about social issues? A place of communion between celebrities and audiences? A lighthearted presentation of clothes? It might be all of the above—or it might be none."

Ashlee+Evan can't match the entertainment value of other reality TV couples
Source: The Muse
Ashlee Simpson and Evan Ross' new E! reality show is moderately entertaining, says Allie Volpe, "but fail to capture the charm of other reality couples like Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler in Very Cavallari or even that of Ashlee’s older sister Jessica Simpson on Newlyweds. Ashlee and Evan’s banter is almost too PG. For a couple with already successful careers and famous families, the stakes on Ashlee+Evan are relatively low. So what if Evan turns down another acting job? He’s got a few already in the queue. Even if Ashlee can’t top 'Pieces of Me'-level fame, she’s still got love and Momma D on her side."

Ashlee Simpson is again using reality TV to reclaim the narrative of her 2004 SNL lip-sync disaster
Simpson first tried to reclaim the narrative from her backing track snafu from the Jude Law-hosted October 23, 2004 Saturday Night Live episode on MTV's The Ashlee Simpson Show. Now she's using the incident to help promote her new E! reality show, Ashlee+Evan. “All of sudden, you know, sh*t happened and it was like boom. And the world hated me for this SNL moment I had,” she said in a clip from her upcoming show.
