Chip and Joanna Gaines are partnering with Discovery to launch the Magnolia Network
Source: USA Today
The former Fixer Upper stars announced on The Tonight Show that they are returning to TV with a new network from HGTV owner Discovery. Magnolia Network, named after their design and decor company, will likely replace the underperforming Discovery-owned DIY, Destination America or Great American Country cable channels. "We signed a non-disclosure and it said, quote unquote, you can tell your mother, but that’s it,” Chip joked to Jimmy Fallon. “So mom, I just wanted to make a quick announcement, we are coming back to television. You are going to get to see the kids grow up, you are going to see us, well maybe a six-month delay like the rest of the world, but we are excited to be back.”

How the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis paved the way for shows like Fixer Upper and Flip or Flop
Source: The New York Times
HGTV and DIY Network, cable networks dependent on housing and real estate programming, had to shake up its programming lineup following the housing crash of a decade ago. Some HGTV shows were canceled because they didn't fit the recessionary times. Fixer Upper, which debuted in 2013, "was markedly different in tone and purpose from the flashy home TV shows popular in the go-go years before the crash," reports Steven Kurutz. "With their focus on family (the couple have five children), the Gaineses became unlikely stars by celebrating the virtues of responsible home stewardship, rather than trying to turn run-down properties into profit centers." Flip or Flop, on the other hand, "occupied a middle ground between the home-restoration and cash-in genres," says Kurutz, adding: "Built into the premise was a twist: The hosts had Great Recession bona fides. When the real estate market tanked, so did their business, forcing them to downgrade to a $700-a-month apartment. They began feeding off fellow casualties of the mortgage crisis, flipping foreclosures, short sales and bank-owned properties."

Trading Spaces ditches the sadness with a kinder, gentler revival
Source: The Muse
As Kate Dries points out, it seems TLC sent an edict that the reboot of its classic home makeover reality show stop being brutal, as viewers prefer watching home makeover reality stars be nice nowadays. The change in attitude, says Dries, reflects the nature of the current makeover reality show landscape, which she says has "settled into a comfortable rhythm since Trading Spaces was last on the air. Characters are known and loved, and people getting upset because of the outcome of their living spaces is not en vogue. Some of the highest-rated shows on HGTV include Fixer Upper, Property Brothers, and Flip or Flop -- programs in which the drama comes from the ribbing between the ones making the houses look great, and from having to adapt to things not working out as they’ve planned, not in the homeowners being disappointed. The focus is on anyone being able to have their dream scenario, not on getting one’s hopes up, only to have them crushed. In this way, the new Trading Spaces ... seems perfectly suited to come back as a slightly tweaked version of its past selves, most of the sadness removed, all of the fun remaining."

Thanks to Fixer Upper, HGTV is loaded with TV shows featuring duos
Source: The New York Times
Chip and Joanna Gaines are ending their highly successful HGTV home makeover show tonight, but the cable network has successfully built a roster of duos to take their place. "For HGTV, their departure is a major loss," says Megan Angelo. "But the couple’s success provided the network with a formula for filling the ratings sinkhole they’ll leave behind: Make shows about charismatic twosomes from underexplored parts of the country. HGTV is applying this formula vigorously; 19 of its current series are toplined by duos, with more on the way. Some of the emerging shows star siblings (Restored by the Fords) or parent-child teams (Good Bones), but most revolve around couples."
