How Jane the Virgin creator Jennie Snyder Urman created her brand-defining hit for The CW
“I am not a young Latina, but I can relate to being hardworking, driven, (and) having a complicated relationship with your mom," says Urman in Vulture profile. Jane the Virgin hasn't been a massive hit, but she's created a devoted fan base. Plus, she's been crucial in building internal backing, especially through her network pitches that have become "moderately famous." Gina Rodriguez says, each season, Urman is "performing the whole f*cking thing. It’s incredible. She’s seated, but it’s a table of 25 to 30 people that are just staring at her. And I’m sitting next to her, like, What the fuck? I always cry, because I’m super-invested. And then Jennie will be like, ‘And then, bang! They die!’ And I’m like, Nooo!”

Gina Rodriguez is using her Emmy campaign money to send an undocumented immigrant to Princeton
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
The Jane the Virgin star has decided to use the CBS TV Studios money she was given to campaign for Emmy consideration to fund a college scholarship for an undocumented high school student. Instead of using the money to pay for swag and glamorous dresses to impress Emmy voters, Rodriguez partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles to find the perfect recipient: a young woman headed to Princeton University. "FYC is a bizarre dance," Rodriguez says of the increasingly expensive For Your Consideration Emmy campaigns. "Whatever you do requires an insane amount of money." She adds: "Our show has always jumped at any opportunity to help me do something for the Latinx community. So I asked my showrunner, Jennie (Snyder Urman), if we could do something different with the money this year."

From Brooklyn Nine-Nine to Parks and Rec to The Good Place: An appreciation of the Michael Schur TV comedy
Schur has become one of the most beloved names in TV comedy with the shows he's created or co-created, says Carli Velocci. "The power of the Schur comedy is that, even while watching the Brooklyn Nine-Nine protagonist go to prison or The Good Place characters get tortured for all eternity, the audience rarely feels anxious or hopeless. These shows are beacons of light in a depressed TV and news landscape," says Velocci. "Schur, along with his crew of frequent writers, collaborators, and actors, have a propensity for unique, diverse, optimistic shows filled with characters that support each other while growing into better people. This approach has led to some of the most memorable titles of the past decade." ALSO: Check out Gina Rodriguez as Rosa's Brooklyn Nine-Nine love interest.

Quit calling Jane the Virgin a "guilty pleasure"
Source: The New Yorker
Soaps, the rom-com, the romance novel -- "these are the genres that get dismissed as fluff," says Emily Nussbaum, "which is how our culture regards art that makes women’s lives look like fun. They’re 'guilty pleasures,' not unlike sex itself. Women use this language, too—even (Gina) Rodriguez, in interviews, has compared her show to red-velvet cupcakes and Justin Bieber. In fact, Jane the Virgin is more like a joyful manifesto against that very putdown, a bright-pink filibuster exposing the layers in what the world regards as shallow."
