How the TV mom has evolved to tackle today's real-world challenges
"Often defined by the parameters of domestic life, these mothers, while vastly different women in many regards, were all in pursuit of an ideal family life," Jason Parham says of iconic TV moms like Carol Brady and Claire Huxtable. "They exuded, or attempted to exude, a kind of imperviousness. They were tough and loving, rarely vulnerable. That's changing." Pointing to Jessica Huang on Fresh off the Boat and Grace and Frankie, he adds: "In recent years, the archetype has taken on a more evolved nature: The TV mom has become more intricately layered; she navigates the world with a kind of naked vulnerability. It's not that she is broken, but she is someone who struggles openly. These are stories told at full scale, fresh wounds and all. Stories that juggle the ugly, the beautiful, the unremarkable. There are no illusions to an ideal life, only a life that has been lived—one that is turbulent and unpredictable and littered with small, hard-won dignities."

What's up with TV's "Black Lady Therapist" trend?
Is the "Black Lady Therapist" the new "Black Best Friend"? Aisha Harris says it "does seem a bit peculiar" that shows like Broad City, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Grace and Frankie all have black female therapists. "If you watch enough shows with dysfunctional protagonists who get to the point of seeking help, you might notice that a lot of familiar black female character actors are popping up in roles that require they wield a notepad and pen while listening intently to other peoples’ problems. And with rare exception, their patients are usually white and at least moderately affluent," she says.

Megyn Kelly Today references “Hanoi Jane” in her escalating feud with Jane Fonda
In response to Fonda saying Kelly is “not that good of an interviewer” for asking about her plastic surgery, Kelly said on Megyn Kelly Today this morning that she has “no regrets” about asking the Grace and Frankie star about plastic surgery, noting that she was promoting a film about aging. Fonda, she said, “has no business lecturing anyone on what qualifies as offensive,” calling her a “woman whose name is synonymous with outrage… Look at her treatment of our military during the Vietnam War — many of our veterans still call her ‘Hanoi Jane’ thanks to her radio broadcasts, which attempted to shame American troops. She posed on an anti-aircraft gun used to shoot down our pilots.”

Grace and Frankie finds a new way to become meaningful in Season 4
“The label-skewing Netflix original has always smoothly shifted between comedy and drama, making it oh-so-fitting that co-creator and showrunner Marta Kauffman would ask the audience to shift their perspective in Season 4,” says Ben Travers. “What was once funny is now frightening — or it might be, and that means Grace and Frankie have to consider both interpretations. It also means (Lily) Tomlin and (Jane) Fonda have to find humor in harrowing moments and vice versa. They’re obviously up for the task, especially in the final three episodes, which set up a strong, surprising ending.” ALSO: Tomlin and Fonda talk Season 4.
