Miss America Cara Mund: It's "possible" Gretchen Carlson will fire me
Source: USA Today
During an appearance on Good Morning America, Mund took issue with Carlson's statement that she should've reached out to the Miss America pageant CEO. Mund says she began raising concerns in January and reached out directly to the board in May and June. With less than three weeks left in her reign, Mund said it was "possible" that she could lose her crown.

Gretchen Carlson pens open letter to Miss America Cara Mund: "I have never bullied or silenced you"
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
The Miss America Pageant chair tweeted an open letter response Sunday night to reigning Miss America Mund's open letter accusing Carlson and the pageant's leadership of bullying, manipulating and silencing her. Carlson explains that she's been unsuccessful in her attempts to reach Mund since her open letter came out Friday, as Mund only wants to communicate via email. The former Fox News anchor goes on to write she was "surprised and saddened" by Mund's letter. "I also want to be clear that I have never bullied or silenced you," she writes. "In fact, I have acknowledged to you and your parents many times that the organization understands the frustrations of serving during such a change-filled and stressful year." Since Mund's letter came out, Carlson writes, "we learned that $75,000 in scholarships which would have been the first scholarship increase in years, is no longer on the table as a direct result of the explosive allegations in your letter. The impact won’t stop there — we are already seeing a negative ripple effect across the entire organization, and I am so concerned that it will dilute the experience for the next woman selected to wear the crown." Gretchen Carlson responds to reigning Miss America's accusations: "I have never bullied Cara Mund"
The current Miss America Mund alleged that new Miss America Organization chair Carlson and her new CEO Regina Hopper silenced, marginalized and bullied her. “I want to be clear that as a proponent of women my entire life, I have never bullied Cara Mund,” Carlson responded in an interview with People magazine. “We have supported Cara for her entire year and we will continue to support her. It’s just disappointing that she chose to air her grievance publicly and not privately.”

Miss America winner accuses Gretchen Carlson of bullying and silencing her -- pageant fires back
Reigning Miss America Cara Mund has written a letter to her fellow Miss Americas complaining about the treatment she's received from Miss America Organization chair Carlson and CEO Regina Hopper. "Let me be blunt: I strongly believe that my voice is not heard nor wanted by our current leadership; nor do they have any interest in knowing who I am and how my experiences relate to positioning the organization for the future,” Mund wrote. “Our chair and CEO have systematically silenced me, reduced me, marginalized me, and essentially erased me in my role as Miss America in subtle and not-so-subtle ways on a daily basis. After a while, the patterns have clearly emerged, and the sheer accumulation of the disrespect, passive-aggressive behavior, belittlement, and outright exclusion has taken a serious toll.” The Miss America Organization responded to Mund's letter by calling her allegations "unfounded": “The Miss America Organization supports Cara," the pageant said in a statement. "It is disappointing that she chose to air her grievances publicly not privately. Her letter contains mischaracterizations and many unfounded accusations. We are reaching out to her privately to address her concerns.” ALSO: Who would have thought that a beauty pageant operating in 2018 would still have issues?

Gretchen Carlson's detractors fear she's attaching her #MeToo mission to the Miss America pageant
Source: The Washington Post
Carlson's leadership, including last month's shock announcement that the swimsuit competition would be scrapped, has divided the Miss America pageant world. According to Amy Argetsinger, "many feel that Carlson’s team misled the pageant world about the reason for last month’s surprise announcement to drop the swimsuit competition and that this year’s contestants are left with a hazy sense of the rules for the Sept. 9 competition. Carlson responded in an interview: 'Change is difficult.'" Argetsinger adds that Carlson's detractors fret that she "is projecting her own brand — as a fierce, brainy commentator who helped launch a movement when she sued Fox News CEO Roger Ailes for sexual harassment — on an organization that, for all its eager attempts at social relevance, still wants to be fun." Carlson's critics also say they are concerned about "transparency." State pageant directors were told the swimsuit competition might affect Miss America's home at ABC, but they then noticed that ABC already shows more risqué subject matter on The Bachelor. Meanwhile, Carlson denies misleading anyone, and calls her detractors a "vocal minority."

Gretchen Carlson defends Miss America changes amid backlash

The changes ushered in by Carlson has resulted in behind-the-scenes drama. Additionally, reps from 22 stage pageants want Carlson and her board to resign, while the former Fox News host has received the support of 30 former Miss America winners. "This board unanimously decided we needed to move this program forward," Carlson, the new Miss America Organization chair, said on Good Morning America, addressing criticism that she forced the changes herself. "We’re working through this in the best way we can," Carlson said of dealing with the backlash. "We believe that physical appearance and beauty and being fit — that is empowering. We’re just not going to judge women on that."

Source: The Daily Beast
Both Kelly and Carlson left Fox News after accusing Roger Ailes of sexual harassment. Yet Kelly criticized the major change made by her former colleague, who is now chair of the Miss America Organization and who spearheaded the elimination of the swimsuit competition. “What’s wrong with showing women in bikinis?” Kelly said on Megyn Kelly Today, adding: “What’s wrong with the bathing suits? They look amazing, they worked hard for it, they’re fit. I find it inspirational to see a really fit woman.” When told the swimsuits objectify women, Kelly responded: “Is it objectification if the woman wants it?" She added: “The reality is, no one is going to want to watch the pageant."

Why Miss America is still indefensible, even without the swimsuit competition
New Miss America Organization chair Gretchen Carlson's announcement that it's now a "competition" and not a "pageant" doesn't mean much, says Christina Cauterucci. "No," she says, "I don’t think the pageant is notably more progressive without the swimsuit shtick. Without any judgment of physical appearance, the Miss America competition almost becomes less defensible—what are the judges judging, if not a woman’s ability to mold her body to conventionally desirable proportions? The remaining components of the pageant—talent, interview, on-stage questions, and the new conversation with judges about life goals—don’t lend themselves to a cohesive vision of best-ness any better than they did when evening gowns and swimsuits were part of the rubric. If women wanted to showcase their tap-dancing or piano skills, they’d audition for America’s Got Talent. If they wanted to get better at answering on-the-spot questions about current events, they’d join a debate league or mock trial."
