Lena Dunham is reportedly no longer friends with Jenni Konner -- she didn't "seem particularly attached" to Camping
Source: The Cut
New York Magazine's Allison P. Davis profiles the Girls star, noting that she was being treated for PTSD while Camping was in production, leaving Konner to take care of the HBO show. The Girls collaborators announced in July that they were splitting as producing partners. "The women had an intensely close friendship, which they often described in interviews as co-dependent," Davis writes. "Others told me Konner was like Dunham’s 'mom.' Her phone, Dunham jokes, is full of photos of herself and Konner still, as if they were married. The loafers she is wearing in Connecticut were a Christmas present from Konner. Last month, Lenny Letter announced it would cease publication. It was a portmanteau of their names (Jenni plus Lena), so it made sense that it couldn’t survive their split. The only times Dunham gets uncharacteristically tight-lipped are when I ask questions about Konner. When she starts her answers, they are usually hedged with “All I will say is” or “I don’t want to speak for Jenni.” It seems there was no explosive breaking point but rather a slow dissolution. People who are close to both of them say they are no longer friends."

Is HBO's Camping the most misunderstood show on TV?
Source: The New Republic
Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner's remake of the Julia Davis-created British cult comedy of the same name received mostly harsh reviews, all of which entirely miss the point, says Josephine Livingstone. "Almost every major review in the U.S. so far has bemoaned the painfulness of the Camping experience," she says, adding: "But great satire is meant to be unpleasant. It’s supposed to make your soul feel the way your mouth does when it fills with bile. When you have that feeling and then you laugh, it has the taste of truth. The new Camping has had some of the old force taken out of its swing, but now and then it delivers a real, live uppercut. A show like this should be a tussle: between viewer and character, between love and hate, between enjoyment and pain. Camping could be nastier still, but at least the fight is there." ALSO: The problem with Camping is the characters aren't unlikable enough.

Lena Dunham's Lenny Letter is shutting down
Source: New York Post
Dunham and her Girls and Camping collaborator Jenni Konner created Lenny Letter, a twice-a-week newsletter and website focused on women's topics that launched in 2015. The newsletter, which once boasted 500,000 subscribers, will shut down on Friday after struggling with ad support.

HBO's Camping is an endurance test of a bad idea starring a miscast Jennifer Garner
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
Unfortunately, nothing much on the Lena Dunham-Jenni Konner follow-up to Girls works, says Tim Goodman. And it starts with the miscast Garner. "Who takes Jennifer Garner and makes her a completely unlikable and joyless nag, annoying everyone around her?" asks Goodman. He adds: "The casting comes off like it was just Dunham and Konner picking friends to fill out roles, which results in an across-the-board lack of chemistry (or much interest) as the story unfolds. And while Camping is indeed supposed to be a story of misery (because none of these people seem like campers, which is probably the central joke of the original series), making Walt's birthday weekend a torturous affair doesn't work if the humor that it's supposed to generate doesn't materialize. Watching becomes as big a slog for the viewer as getting through that ill-advised camping trip is for the characters."
- Camping is a Lena Dunham series with Jennifer Garner in the Dunham role: "Garner gives unlikability her all, but it comes across as pretending"
- It's a deeply unpleasant viewing experience, led by the single most insufferable TV character in recent memory
- Camping isn’t fun to watch at all -- except to see a misfire take shape
- Garner makes sense for the lead role, making her downright odious character at least laughably maddening
- You'll love how much you'll hate Jennifer Garner's character
- Garner plays a profoundly difficult character, and she embraces it, though "her innate Jennifer Garner-hood" shines through
- Garner's character becomes exhausting to her "friends" and the audience
- Camping shows so little insight or movement that watching it becomes nearly as unpleasant as it is for the characters living through it
- Lena Dunham calls Camping "one giant bottle episode"
- Jennifer Garner and David Tennant discuss leaving their comfort zones

Jenni Konner: There's no "drama" behind producing breakup with Girls collaborator Lena Dunham
“We feel super lucky to have had eight amazing years together, we just want to do different things. There’s no drama to be found there," Konner told critics at the TCA press tour while promoting HBO's Camping. "It’s just about the creative process." Dunham wasn't in attendance due to being under the weather.

The Girls collaborators, who have been recently filming HBO's Camping, will sign individual deals with HBO after their joint deal expires at the end of this year. "We have had one of the most significant relationships together in our adult lives and we respect each other’s choices," Dunham and Konner said in a statement. "While our interests are pulling us in different directions right now, we are excited about our current work and are firmly committed to the projects we have together. HBO has been our home for quite some time and we look forward to continuing there as we both move forward."

HBO is bringing Jennifer Garner back to TV with the comedy Camping from Girls’ Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner
Garner is making her return to television 12 years after the finale of Alias finale for an eight-episode limited series based on the British TV comedy of the same name. Garner will play “a controlling L.A. mom who is far less cheerful than her Lululemons imply” who goes on a frustrating camping trip with her husband, her “meek” sister and her “holier than thou ex-best friend.” Dunham and Konner will serve as showrunners, while Camping creator Julia Davis will also serve as an executive producer. “We love Jennifer’s restraint and comedic timing, and we can’t wait for the warmth and intelligence she’ll bring to our central character, Kathryn,” Dunham and Konner said in a statement. “It’s truly a dream to have her first on our call sheet. Now we just have to write her some stunts.”

Lena Dunham under fire for defending Girls writer accused of rape three months after tweeting ”women don’t lie about” rape
Dunham has been a staunch advocate on behalf of sexual assault survivors, even tweeting on August 4: “Things women do lie about: what the ate for lunch. Things women don’t lie about: rape.” Yet Dunham is being slammed on Twitter for issuing a statement in support of Girls writer Murray Miller, whom actress Aurora Perrineau is accusing of raping her in 2012, when she was 17 and he was 35. Dunham cited “our insider knowledge of Murray’s situation” to determine that “sadly this accusation is one of the 3 percent of assault cases that are misreported every year.” As Yesha Callahan argues, “of course this will now play out in the court system, but one has to wonder why is Dunham now rushing to give her friend the benefit of the doubt?”

Lena Dunham: We stand by Girls writer Murray Miller amid rape accusation
“While our first instinct is to listen to every woman’s story, our insider knowledge of Murray’s situation makes us confident that sadly this accusation is one of the 3% of assault cases that are misreported every year,” Dunham said in a statement co-signed by Girls showrunner Jenni Konner. Murray is accused of raping Aurora Perrineau, the daughter of Lost alum Harold Perrineau, when she was 17 and he was 35 back in 2012. Perrineau filed a police report on Friday. "We stand by Murray and this is all we’ll be saying about this issue,” Dunham said in the statement.
