Doctor Who with Jodie Whittaker's main flaw is a lack of inner conflict
"There is no doubt, no trauma and no overwhelming sense of having to prove something," says Katherine Cross of Whittaker's Doctor. "She is simply there, and it is, in its way, a validating triumph of all the previous seasons. The Doctor has grown. All the pain and conflict that had driven her has ultimately led her to a place where she can say those words without agony. It’s enchanting. But the show still needs conflict to work. Every story does. What replaces the doubt and pain that have defined the character for so long? So far, there isn’t much." Doctor Who critics weigh in on Jodie Whittaker's performance: From guaranteed to stick in people's hearts to not psychopathic enough
Source: The Guardian
"Series 11 has been a whirlwind of exciting adventures for Who fans, old and new," says Beth Axford. "A highlight has been Whittaker’s performance, one guaranteed to stick in people’s hearts forever... Episodes have been beautifully crafted, fun, rewatchable and thought-provoking. Could it be better? Perhaps." Adds Cameron Reilly: "Unfortunately, from the outset, I felt (showruner Chris) Chibnall either doesn’t get the fundamentals of the Doctor’s inherent psychopathy, or has decided to write it out, making Whittaker a kinder, gentler, touchy-feely, kid-friendly Doctor." Jodie Whittaker's Doctor Who ought to be scary
"Through its many iterations, many of the show’s best moments come from times in which The Doctor proves to be flat-out terrifying," says Liz Shannon Miller. "His/her power is immense, and that power can be used to celebrate the best in those he/she encounters — or, it could just as well be otherwise. But so far, Whittaker is still missing the moment afforded every other modern-era Doctor, when the audience was forced to reckon with just how destructive The Doctor could be."
