Steven Spielberg recalls directing Steven Bochco's Columbo series premiere script in 1971
The Sept. 15, 1971 Columbo episode "Murder By the Book" kicked off the Peter Falk series after two previous Columbo TV movies. Spielberg and Bochco, the respective future titans of the movies and television, were still in their 20s when they collaborated on the first episode of a series that would have a 10-season run on NBC and ABC. "Steve was a friend and a colleague starting with the first episode of Columbo in 1971 that he wrote and I directed," said Spielberg in a statement, reacting to Bochco's death. "We have supported and inspired each other ever since and through many deep mutual friendships we have stayed connected for 47 years. I will miss Steve terribly.”

Buffy's Joss Whedon and Degrassi creators talk about how they'd portray gun violence in schools following Parkland
Whedon, who's attending March for Our Lives on Saturday, recalls Buffy the Vampire Slayer being pulled in wake of the Columbine shooting. If he was doing a school shooting story today, he says he'd emphasize respect for the gravity of the situation. “If you're in the head of a person who's trapped in a classroom, if you don't let genre tropes outweigh the physical and mental experience of the people you're filming, then you have a shot at saying something useful," he says. Adds DeGrassi co-creator Linda Schuyler, who has depicted school shootings, most famously with Drake: “We do not want to glorify things, and we don't want to sensationalize them."

Leave Buffy the Vampire Slayer alone: "To resurrect her would be a cruel and ultimately selfish act..."
"...So, of course, network execs want to do it," says Aimée Lutkin, reacting to Fox TV Group chair Gary Newman calling Buffy "the most ripe show" for a reboot. "Let’s pray (Joss) Whedon never decides it’s time," Lutkin adds. "Watching Buffy was a formative experience for many, but things have changed—in particular, the perception of Whedon as a feminist hero, following a very public accusation of cheating from his wife on the set of that very show, as well as other emotional manipulations. While I personally can’t dismiss this beloved show, I still can’t imagine that a reboot with Whedon at the helm would be anything short of a total disaster. Buffy had her moment, but that moment has passed and is also still available to stream online when the mood strikes." ALSO: There are too many ways a Buffy revival could go wrong.

Fox wants a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot to happen, but only if Joss Whedon says yes
Calling Buffy the "most ripe show" Fox has for a reboot, Fox TV group chair Gary Newman said at INTV conference in Jerusalem: “It’s something we talk about frequently, and Joss Whedon is really one of the greatest creators we ever worked with. When Joss decides it’s time, we’ll do it. And until Joss decides it’s time, it won’t happen.” ALSO: Newman admits he probably “wouldn’t get out of the building alive” if he rebooted Buffy. ALSO: Whedon said last year he worries about TV reboots, but won't rule out a Buffy revival.

Nathan Fillion is using his experience with Joss Whedon on Firefly on ABC's The Rookie
“I had an experience on Firefly where everybody that worked on that show considered it the bar to which we could compare all of our other jobs," says Fillion, who is also a producer on the series in which he plays a 40-something rookie cop. "That was the benefit of Joss Whedon, who said ‘I want great actors that can make this language sing and I want people I can potentially spend seven years with’ and I benefited from that. I want The Rookie to be similar."

Joss Whedon’s ex-wife accuses him of cheating on the Buffy set, calls him a “hypocrite preaching feminist ideals"
In an article for The Wrap, Kai Cole recalls meeting Whedon at the start of his career in 1991. But their relationship found trouble when he found success with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She quotes him as saying, “When I was running Buffy, I was surrounded by beautiful, needy, aggressive young women. It felt like I had a disease, like something from a Greek myth. Suddenly I am a powerful producer and the world is laid out at my feet and I can’t touch it.”
