As a hangout show, Lodge 49 accomplished a lot in its first season

"Some viewers might say the show requires patience, leaving only breadcrumbs where big-budget, capital-letter theme shows are dropping chunks of baguette to fuel speculation," says Danette Chavez. "That’s not entirely inaccurate; I guess I’ve just found the experience of simply watching this show more rewarding than solving some others. All the talk of Paracelsus and alchemy has turned heads (including my own, which has occasionally been preoccupied with comparing Dud and Liz to Apollo and Artemis), but Lodge 49 is so appealing as a hangout show that I’m usually prepared to just plop down in front of the screen and let the geniality and fuzzy surfer rock wash over me. This show’s exceptional cast makes even the prickliest of the Lynx members warm and inviting."

The Paul Giamatti-produced drama starring Wyatt Russell as an ex-surfer wandering around Long Beach will return for a second 10-episode season after its first season received critical acclaim but few eyeballs. The AMC series averaged 350,000 same-day viewers. "Lodge 49 tells a funny, wise and meaningful story that immediately and deeply resonated with critics and viewers alike," said David Madden, president of programming at AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios, adding that "we are particularly proud of this series from both an AMC network and AMC Studios perspective and are looking forward to a return trip to the Lodge."

Lodge 49 is the first TV show to understand the post-recession economy

The new AMC series is "TV’s most astute treatment of the Great Recession’s long reach since it all came undone that fraught, fateful autumn, a rough year for many that soon became five, and then ten," says Matt Brennan. He adds: "In its anti-establishment bent, its shabby setting, its socioeconomic backdrop, even its strange fascination with charlatans and philosophers, Lodge 49’s rangy, low-key particulars ultimately add up to the series’ essential question, and perhaps our own: How can we regain our sense of purpose, of value, in a culture that defines our worth on the basis of work?"

Lodge 49 is an oddball of a show that rewards viewers who have the time and patience for its eccentricities
"It meanders and takes a while to get to the point, and even when it gets there, sometimes the point still seems muddled," says Jen Chaney of the AMC drama series starring Wyatt Russell. "But it earns credit for embracing its weirdness and being unlike practically any other show that’s currently on TV. Which is a bold statement considering how many shows are currently on TV."
- Lodge 49 is a little Big Lebowski and too much "Surfer, Dude"
- It's the right kind of weird: A melancholy, 10-episode rumination on loss and friendship
- Viewers have to be patient with Lodge 49's leisurely pace, which reveals a solid, if densely constructed, narrative infrastructure
- Creator Jim Gavin calls Lodge 49 a personal story inspired by his past
