MTV VMAs producers are trying to figure out how to address Demi Lovato's overdose
Producers are going "back and forth" about how to handle Lovato's overdose -- if they handle it at all. "It’s so important,” executive producer Bruce Gilmer tells Us Weekly. “We just talked about this. We toggle back and forth with this big platform. Sometimes, the thought is, ‘Let’s use this for a greater good.’ But sometimes, we get feedback that people want to come in and escape the world for a minute." The VMAs intend Monday's awards show to be escapist fare. "We’re overrun with politics and messages, so what you’re going to see this year are a couple of poignant moments and the lion’s share is going to be straight fun," says Gilmer. One of the poignant moments will include a tribute to Aretha Franklin.

How Aretha Franklin inspired reality singing competitions like American Idol
The Queen of Soul expressed interest in 2012 in joining the then-Fox reality singing competition as a judge. As Emily Yahr points out, Idol had a particular connection with Franklin. In 2012, the contestants traveled to Detroit for a special sit-down with her. But it wasn't just Idol that Franklin influenced. "If there was a prize for the song performed most frequently on a reality singing competition show, '(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman' would have an easy shot at the crown," says Yahr. Contestants on everything from The Voice to Nashville Star to America's Got Talent "wanted to be like her, and they wanted to sing like her," says Yahr. "Franklin songs from 'Respect' to 'Chain of Fools' to 'Ain’t No Way' continue to be a reality show staple."

Kelly Clarkson tells Howard Stern that Avril Lavigne apologized for elbowing her in the face at the VMAs
In a thorough interview this morning with Howard Stern, Clarkson recalled that other musicians didn’t really think she paid her dues because she rose to fame on American Idol. ”I got elbowed in the face by someone I was giving an award to at the VMAs," she recalled, without revealing Lavigne’s name. But the 2002 incident is shown in a YouTube video. And Stern got Clarkson to admit it was Lavigne, who would later pen Clarkson's hit "Breakaway." Clarkson added: “But I will say this: Years later I saw her and she said, 'Oh my gosh, people keep saying I elbowed you in the face and I’m so sorry!' And I don't know... she did it... but I don't know if she felt bad about it, or she didn't mean to do it, or what... but it felt purposeful!" ALSO: Stern got Clarkson to sing “A Moment Like This.”
