Jon Bernthal on The Punisher returning amid many Marvel-Netflix cancelations "I know the reality of the situation and I’m at peace with it"
"I really only worry about the things I can control," Bernthal says in promoting Season 2. "When I’m playing the character and I’m doing the job and it’s right there in front of me, I do whatever I can to make it as good as I can. But in this business there’s so much we can’t control. Whatever is happening with these shows, these decisions are being made in rooms I’m not invited into and I’m OK with that.” ALSO: Season 2 is plagued by shoddy writing.

Jon Bernthal says “F*ck them” to The Punisher’s alt-right fans
Bernthal doesn’t like that some alt-righters have used The Punisher’s symbol at white supremacy rallies. He also tells Esquire that he’s thought long and hard about his characters association with guns, especially in the wake of the Las Vegas massacre. Noting that he’s a responsible gun owner, Bernthal says: “Should there be a way that a guy with mental issues like the asshole in Texas can’t get guns? Absolutely. We have to have a dialogue, and that’s not happening.”

How The Punisher humanizes mass murder
Source: The Outline
“The show emphasizes his trauma to relieve him of agency for what he does,” says Dan Brooks. “Because his PTSD is beyond his control, he is free to kill a bunch of people, and we are free to enjoy it.”

The Punisher showrunner: “In terms of our depiction of violence, the show is pretty realistic”
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
“I sort of feel like that's the right thing,” says executive producer Steve Lightfoot. “I worry about a show where someone gets whacked on the head with something and there isn't a mark on them, and they jump right back up. What was important to me is that if you were going to show violence, you had to show the emotional cost of it as well. As much as Frank goes out and does these things, I don't think we're condoning it all of the time. There's a massive emotional cost to him. He's not a remotely happy guy. In terms of the debate politically, I'm not a politician, but I feel the show actually sort of offers a lot of facets of the debate and asks questions, and it's up to the people to decide what their answers are. It's not the show's place to preach, but we can offer up questions, and people can decide for themselves.”

By transcending what it appears to be, Netflix's The Punisher turns out surprisingly great
At first, the Marvel series seems like another misstep, says Sonia Soraiya. “In the television landscape at large, another overwhelmingly gray and brutally violent show centered on a dysfunctional antihero is superfluous,” she says. “Within the superhero genre, it’s even more so. But The Punisher transcends what it appears to be. Not completely, and not always; this is still a very violent show, saturated in tortured masculinity ... But thanks to Jon Bernthal’s seamless performance as the non-superpowered vigilante Frank Castle and showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s sharp, conscious storytelling, The Punisher approaches the high points of Marvel’s Jessica Jones by introducing a damaged, deadly character and telling his story as one piece of an unjust whole.”
- It’s a surprisingly sensitive look at what it’s like to be a soldier
- It glosses over The Punisher’s violent vigilante's murderous tendencies with a compelling conspiracy thriller
- Bernthal’s Punisher is perfect for a four- to six-hour miniseries, but 13 episodes is stretching it
- “The good stuff is surrounded by an imaginatively impoverished wasteland”

Netflix releasing The Punisher so soon after the Texas Church Shooting doesn’t seem appropriate
The Marvel series starring Jon Bernthal “will debut this Friday,” says Alan Sepinwall, “less than two weeks after another mass shooting, this time at a Texas church where the gunman reportedly wore black tactical gear, like the Punisher, and a mask with a skull on it, like the emblem on the Punisher’s torso. Given the similarities — including the fact that the Punisher, aka Frank Castle, is an unstable man with an arsenal of automatic weapons he uses to vent his rage on the people he blames for his unhappiness — it’s surprising at first blush that Netflix didn’t push back the premiere some more.”
