Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown denounces internet bullying in MTV Movie & TV Awards speech
Brown couldn't make Saturday's ceremony because of a knee injury, so she used her pre-recorded speech to address her decision to quit Twitter after becoming a homophobic meme. "Since I know there are many young people watching this—and even for the adults—they could probably use the reminder that I was taught. If you don’t have anything nice to say, just don’t say it," she said. There should be no space in this world for bullying, and I’m not going to tolerate it, and neither should any of you. If you need a reminder of how worthy you are and to rise above the hate, message me on Instagram.”

Isn't it weird that MTV Movie & TV Awards nominated 13-year-old characters for "Best Kiss"?
Stranger Things stars Finn Wolfhard and Millie Bobby Brown are competing in the "Best Kiss" category with older character kisses like on Love, Simon, Jane the Virgin and Ready Player One. "While the kiss definitely made for a great end to the series, is it appropriate to give them an award for it?" asks Kathryn Lindsay. "I don't know, it just feels weird given that their characters are 13 years old. Is it not a little odd to be cheering for that kiss alongside full-on make-out scenes? Plus, while their inclusion is a nod to the continued popularity of the show, it takes up space from the many other deserving kisses that dominated movies and TV this year."

Kids' Choice Awards got political, but that shouldn't be surprising
Source: The Washington Post
This year's ceremony got political by honoring participants in March for Our Lives. "While that might surprise adults who don’t pay attention to kid-centric programming," says Emily Yahr, "Nickelodeon’s parent company Viacom (other channels include MTV, VH1, CMT, BET, Comedy Central and TV Land) has made an effort to emphasize politics since MTV’s early Rock the Vote days, and particularly in the last month since the high school shooting in Parkland, Fla. Two weeks ago, multiple Viacom channels went dark during the national school walkout over gun violence. This weekend, MTV joined with the NAACP to pay for buses to take teens to the march in Washington."

Millie Bobby Brown and John Cena salute March for Our Lives at Kids' Choice Awards
Stranger Things star Brown honored Saturday's march against gun violence by wearing a jean jacket displaying the names of the Parkland victims. “The March for Our Lives demonstrations that took place all over the world today have inspired me and it impacted us all in one way or another," she said while accepting the award for Favorite TV Actress. "I’m fortunate to be here tonight to receive an award as an actor. I’m so very grateful and I appreciate the love and support of my fans and the opportunity that our show, Stranger Things, has created for me. More than anything, I get to be up here and I’m privileged to have a voice that can be heard, one that I can hopefully use to make a positive difference, and help influence change." In his opening monologue, John Cena also expressed support for March for Our Lives. “Kids everywhere have already made it an amazing day,” Cena said in his opening monologue. “So I just want to take a moment to celebrate what kids across the nation accomplished today. From Washington DC, Florida, even here in Los Angeles, all over the country, all over the world, kids made their voice heard with the incredible March for our Lives. And it all happened because you want to make the world a better place.

Stranger Things stars are getting a big raise in advance of Season 3
The child stars of the Netflix series will see their salary soar from $30,000 an episode to between $150,000-$250,000 an episode, according to Deadline's Nellie Andreeva, who adds that Millie Bobby Brown "is believed to have landed a bigger raise than her young counterparts" thanks to her breakout star status. Adult stars Winona Ryder and David Harbour also scored significant raises, bumping their per-episode salary to $200,000 an episode to keep their pay ahead of the children. As Andreeva explains, "while actors cast as series regulars on a TV show almost always have long-term deals, it has become a tradition for the casts of successful series to renegotiate their contracts after the second season after receiving one-time bonuses ahead of Season 2. That is what happened with the main players on Stranger Things." UPDATE: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ryder and Harbour are each getting $350,000 an episode while the main kid stars will earn $250,000 per episode.

The Stranger Things kids have become annoying with all their TV ads shilling products
Source: The Outline
“I’m sick of the Stranger Things kids selling me stuff,” says Jeremy Gordon. “The sight of the Stranger Things kids pushing everything from Converse shoes to some Italian video player called the Casa 3 (they even invented a referential storyline, in which Will disappears again) felt more grating than usual, because it was too close to the way the show actually works,” he says. Gordon adds: “To see so many of these precocious children conscripted into such trickery makes me further distrust the insistence that this is all fun and games — that somehow a commercial can be amusing, or even good, when the fundamental concept is to hawk some sh*t to us by playing on our feelings…To watch someone like the talented Millie Bobby Brown make dozens of goofy faces to promote the Converse Chuck Taylor, as she does in one commercial, is the lie behind Stranger Things being exposed in real time — that if we can be made to feel this cheaply good about a shoe, then of course it would be the same for a monster show.”

An unhealthy obsession between adult Stranger Things fans and the show’s child stars have been building for months
As Dee Lockett notes, the unhealthy obsession began last year when certain fans wouldn’t distinguish between the child actors from the characters they play. It proceeded recently with adult fans trying to sexualize Finn Wolfhard, with one 27-year-old model asking the 14-year-old Wolfhard to “hit me up in four years.” There was also some controversy when an NBC Universal executive tweeted about Millie Bobby Brown’s “grown-up” looks. And it all culminated in last weekend's story over Wolfhard not stopping for fans outside of his hotel. “The kids of Stranger Things,” says Lockett, “have been embroiled in a terribly adult controversy.”
