Love Is_ leaves a queasy feeling following the abuse allegations against co-creator Salim Akil that led to its cancelation
Source: The Atlantic
Allegations from actress Amber Dixon Brenner that Akil abused her changed the saccharine nature of the show, says Hannah Giorgis. "Following the news of Brenner’s allegations, it’s hard not to feel queasy when considering the show’s central dogma—and one plot point in particular," she says. "The actor’s claims about Akil are particularly disturbing given the prominence that sexual violence plays in the series."

OWN's Love Is__ cancelation was "the right thing," says the women who accused co-creator Salim Akil of abuse
"I did feel a sense of this is the right thing, this is correct response from the OWN network. This is a correct response to Salim and Mara and it felt like a bit of an acknowledgment of what I had gone through," says actress Amber Dixon Brenner, who sued Akil last month for alleged domestic violence and abuse. (Variety reports Warner Bros. TV investigated the allegations and found no evidence of misconduct.) Dixon tells Deadline that Akil's wife, Love Is__ co-creator Mara Brock Akil, knew about their affair. "Look, it’s a sad situation," she added. "It’s a terrible situation that I was ever in the predicament of having to call him out and her out. It’s tragic to me that these things ever happened. It’s tragic to me that my work was stolen and then misappropriated to their supposed love story. Honestly, the first time I saw the show, and we can go back on the record, my first reaction was I want my work off the television now. I want this off"

OWN cancels Love Is__ following domestic abuse allegations against co-creator Salim Akil
The romantic drama, which premiered in June and was renewed for Season 2 in July, has been canceled, effective immediately, despite a Warner Bros. TV inquiry into Akil finding no evidence of misconduct. "OWN has decided not to move forward with the second season of ‘Love Is __,'” the cable network said in a statement. “The TV memoir was inspired by the real-life love story of producers Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil.” According to The Wrap, OWN's decision "to scrap the series is said to be unrelated to the abuse allegation or the subsequent Warner Bros. inquiry." Actress Amber Dixon Brenner filed a lawsuit last month claiming domestic violence, sexual abuse and breach of contract. Love Is__ was based on the romantic life of Akil and his wife Mara Brock Akil. Salim Akil also serves as showrunner on The CW's Black Lightning.

Tyler Perry recalls offering Geoffrey Owens an acting job on The Haves and Have Nots
Source: ABC News
After seeing the viral story of Owens working at Trader Joe's, Perry tells GMA, "I said, 'Hmm, I got something for you. I'll write a senator in, make you a senator in this'....I called him up and the next week I had written him into 11 shows. But when he showed up the first day, I saw him in costume, I had 20,000 more ideas running in my head for him." Perry says Owens' story reminded him of his days trying to make it while "sleeping in my car, struggling, wondering how I was going to pay the bills."

Geoffrey Owens talks connecting with Justine Bateman on "Fame" after his Trader Joe's shaming, says Tyler Perry's offer was "not a handout"
Source: The New York Times
The Cosby Show alum has had a busy few weeks since he went viral for working at Trader Joe's. He had to fly to Atlanta to film OWN's The Haves and Have Nots, agree to an NCIS: Los Angeles guest role while weighing other acting offers. Was he concerned that Tyler Perry only wanted to hire him because of the Trader Joe's picture? "No, I was not presumptuous and ungrateful enough to say such a thing," Owens tells The New York Times, in an interview looking back at his recent viral fame. "I know that Tyler Perry is a very shrewd businessman. He would never make that offer if he didn’t think I could deliver. I think of it this way: He offered me the role but it’s not like I don’t have to do a job. It’s a job I have to do for him and I have to do it well. It’s an offer, but it’s not a handout. He knows my work and he knows that I’m a professional and I can do what he needs me to do." Owens says he's also formed a connection with fellow former NBC sitcom star Justine Bateman, of Family Ties fame, who graduated from UCLA two years ago at age 49 with a degree in computer science and management. "Justine Bateman came to my defense on social media and she sought to reach me personally," says Owens. "And so we started to communicate directly via text and she has been extremely supportive, and she even sent me a copy of her book that is being published as we speak, a book called Fame, which is wonderful. I’ve actually already read it. She is one of the few people who shares the experience that I have. A person who experienced great fame and celebrity, more than I ever did, for longer, and then has had to adjust to not being famous, which is a lot of what her book is about. We understand certain things that very few people can understand, not to sound elitist about it."

Behind the scenes of Queen Sugar's Season 3 finale
Filming a rural Louisiana wedding in July wasn't the ideal time to be dressed in formal clothes, says Angelica Jade Bastién of her Season 3 finale set visit. "It’s an understatement to say that shooting in these conditions takes a lot out of you," she writes. "Everyone has been working since the afternoon, and for the crew, much earlier. We’re approaching midnight, and they won’t be done until past 4 a.m. Between shots, I can see the heat wearing on (Tina) Lifford and (Omar) Dorsey. But when they hear action, their faces soften into a loving repose. The scene is bumpy at first, with the pastor fumbling his lines. But once everyone gets into the right groove, it quickly becomes a loving tribute to one of the show’s central romances." ALSO: The revolutionary power of pies on Queen Sugar.
