OWN's Love Is__ is revolutionary in the way it gives a black TV couple the When Harry Met Sally treatment
"To the best of my recollection there has never been a TV series fronted by a predominantly black cast that makes romance — one romance in particular — its primary focus," says Melanie McFarland of the new OWN series inspired by the real-life romance of creators Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil. "To clarify, I’m talking about romance in all of its intoxication, pain, giddiness and lunacy, as the center of two lives. Not as a catalyst for soap opera conflict, or an element of a character portrait. Not as a secondary occurrence to the action that happens where they work or a side story to what they do. Nope, simple garden variety, crazy stupid love, the kind that knocks a person’s senses out of their head and lasts. That’s the heart of OWN drama’s Love Is ___, debuting Tuesday at 10 p.m. And if the idea of a show that’s about messy love between two regular people makes you to react with some version of 'ugh,' this show is not for you." ALSO: There's so much to love about this series that it's easy to forgive the cheesy dialogue.

Oprah signs deal to create original programming for Apple
Apple announced it has signed Oprah Winfrey to a multi-year content partnership deal to "create original programs that embrace her incomparable ability to connect with audiences around the world.” The deal falls outside of her work on Oprah Winfrey Network. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "the pact includes everything from film, TV, applications, books and other content that could easily be distributed on Apple's all-encompassing platform," Other tech giants, likely Netflix and Amazon, were also pursuing Oprah, reports The Hollywood Reporter's Lesley Goldberg, but "Apple is said to have aggressively pursued Winfrey as part of a larger push to reach a broad audience." As Deadline notes, Oprah's OWN "exclusivity is for ad-supported cable only, and she is allowed to produce and appear on-camera on other platforms on a limited basis. Under these exceptions she is a contributor on CBS’ 60 Minutes and last year executive produced and co-starred in the HBO movie The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Also as part of that, she can produce and appear in projects for Apple."

Smithsonian's "Watching Oprah" exhibit looks like a (deserving) reward for her $21 million donation
The exhibit honoring Oprah Winfrey at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture opens on Friday. And according to Sebastian Smee, the exhibit is "a testament — to Oprah, obviously, and her extraordinary story. But also to the rest of us, black and white, American and otherwise. It’s a testament to our culture’s transformation, to who we have become. Is it strange, perhaps even a little concerning, that a woman who is the biggest single donor to this museum should be treated to an exhibition exclusively about her, and so soon after its opening? You bet it is. It’s not a good look. Yet in the end, it’s hard to argue that Winfrey is undeserving of such an exhibition. She had the highest-rated talk show of all time. It aired all over the world for 25 years. No African American woman — you could persuasively argue no man or woman of any race — has had a bigger effect on the culture at large over the past 30 years."
