On My Block star apologizes for her past pro-Trump and anti-gun control tweets, saying she's learned "so much from this show"
Ronni Hawk, who plays a Latina character on the Netflix urban high school series, upset fans with her since-deleted tweets supporting Trump after his election and denouncing gun control efforts in the wake of the Parkland school shooting. "The truth is I was 16 years old when I put that post out there and at 18, I now know that I am not informed enough on several different subjects to be posting blindly," Hawk wrote in her apology. She added: "I learned so much from this show-about injustices that take place in this world and that being silent is just as bad as doing nothing."

On My Block fans are up in arms that one of the stars may be a Trump supporter
Ronni Hawk plays a Latina character on the Netflix inner-city teen series. She also apparently tweeted support of Donald Trump and celebrated his victory on the morning after the 2016 election in since-deleted tweets. As Jade Bukowski explains, "for many fans, the anger comes from the alleged hypocrisy that comes with supporting Trump and starring on a series that directly addresses many of the hardships that immigrants and marginalized groups face. Hawk’s character in particular is affected by this, making the whole thing even more upsetting for fans."

How Netflix cornered the market on coming-of-age teen series
Netflix has found a new audience in the post-millennial generation with shows like 13 Reasons Why, Degrassi: The Next Generation, On My Block and Everything Sucks! -- not to mention Stranger Things. "Altogether, these dynamic shows make for a Netflix Originals library that's flush with series that detail, from multiple points of view and in many different styles, the challenges and triumphs of adolescence," says Kaitlin Thomas. "They explore how the events that shape us as we come of age continue to affect us and mold us as we grow older and mature. But perhaps more importantly, they are giving voice to today's youth at a time when young adults are proving to be more powerful than ever before, and providing a diverse array of blueprints that show them what happens when they harness that energy and drive."

On Netflix's On My Block, there is a struggle between authenticity and pandering
Like The Chi, which also focuses on an inner-city neighborhood, the South Los Angeles-set teen series has its heart in the right place, but the results are stilted, says Chris Osterndorf. "Moments, where the kids are speaking in their own slang, are also halfway between clever and forced, like when they’re debating whether one of them is 'strike-worthy,' which is a clunky joke about parole," says Osterndorf. ALSO: On My Block is a confident series that challenges its young actors.
