Once Upon a Time co-creators discuss the series finale
"We went into this season knowing it could be the last because anytime you have major cast leave and it's a season and you're on Friday night, you have to plan for it or you would be an irresponsible showrunner," says co-creator Eddy Kitsis. "So, we knew this was an option and thankfully ABC has been such great supporters of the show, they gave us enough time so that it wasn't like, 'Oh my god,' scrambled in the last minute. We've been planning this since December."

Once Upon a Time mocks its complicated storylines
The first hour of the two-part series finale had a special treat for longtime fans of the ABC fairy tale drama -- a meta joke about the show reputation for complicated storylines. “One of the consequences of the show having had such a long run — seven seasons and more than 150 episodes — is that our characters’ lives, and the stories we’ve told with them, have become, well, complicated,” says executive producer David H. Goodman, who wrote this week's episode. “We talk about the show’s timeline in the writers’ room constantly. So as we closed out the series, it seemed like a good opportunity to poke some fun at ourselves and tip our hats to the audience. We’re incredibly thankful that they’ve come along with us for such a wild ride.”

Trump's Syria bombing announcement cut off the end of Once Upon a Time, leaving fans frustrated
The last minute of the ABC drama was preempted Friday night on Eastern and Midwest time zones for President Trump's announcement that he had called on airstrikes in Syria. "Everyone knows that the final few minutes of every Once Upon a Time episode can be make or break as the show drops pivotal moments in the final seconds — be it a plot twist, a sudden death or even a new curse," says TV Guide's Lindsay MacDonald. "That's obviously why fans were left a little angry when the final minutes of tonight's episode were preempted so President Donald Trump could address the nation about Syria." One Twitter user tweeted his frustration: "Trump's Syria announcement interrupted the last minute of Once Upon a Time, and I am livid." Added another Twitter user said: "What happens at the end? @OnceABC stupid special report on a**hole Trump cut what I taped. What does Facilier say to Hansel? Please help!" Still, another Once fan tweeted: "My family didn’t pay electricity and internet for me to have to hear Trump when I could have been enjoying the last scene of a great episode directed by the QUEEN @LanaParrilla."

Once Upon a Time will end with Season 7
Ratings for the Disney-themed fairy tale drama have tumbled 35% since it was moved from Sundays to Fridays. In fact, Once Upon a Time's disappointing performance, including hitting series lows, has hurt the network that has traditionally done well on Friday nights. “For seven years, they have captivated us with their creativity and passion while reimagining some of our most beloved Disney fairytales, creating an undeniable global hit,” ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said in a statement. “Saying goodbye will be bittersweet, but Once Upon a Time will forever be part of the ABC legacy and we can’t wait for fans to join us in this epic final chapter.”

ABC is “cautiously optimistic” of bringing Once Upon a Time back for Season 8
“It’s always hard at this point in January to know because some of it’s also dependent on your new development and how you feel about some of those things,” explained ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey, “so that’s part of why it’s really hard at the top of the year to really know what’s going to happen.”
