Robin Thede to create and star in an ABC comedy based on her childhood
The former host of BET's The Rundown with Robin Thede is writing the project, with plans to star. According to Deadline, the untitled series is "inspired in part by her childhood growing up dirt poor in a trailer park. The show will explore how a difficult upbringing shaped Robin Sanders (Thede), a famous and successful financial advisor, and will vacillate between the character’s adulthood and childhood as it examines how your past always pops up in the present."

Samantha Bee finds Michelle Wolf and Robin Thede cancelations "very disheartening"

“I’m really, really sad about it,” the Full Frontal host says of BET canceling The Rundown with Robin Thede and Netflix axing The Break with Michelle Wolf over the past month. Bee tells The Daily Beast: “You have to take time as a network to develop things. If it’s not working for you in the time slot or whatever, you have to give a show more than 10 episodes to find its legs. It’s brutal. Shows need time to find their audience and they need adequate advertising. They need adequate promotional pushes to make that happen.”

BET's cancelation of The Rundown with Robin Thede is a mystery

There was no mention of ratings performance in the reporting and BET's announcement of the cancelation of The Rundown, which received universally positive reviews. "It seems as if The Rundown was a casualty of a recent changing of the guard at BET," says KC Ifeanyi. "Chairman and CEO Debra Lee, who greenlit Thede’s show, stepped down in May, paving the way for Scott M. Mills to oversee strategy and operations for BET as president. Reportedly, Mills’s vision is to increase the network’s scripted content and original movies. How there’s no room in that vision for a late-night political satire show driven by an underrepresented voice in the conversation is perplexing to say the least."

BET cancels The Rundown with Robin Thede after one season
Thede, the former head writer for Larry Wilmore's The Nightly Show, received rave reviews with the launch of her BET late-night show last October. "But the lack of renewal news after the show wrapped its initial 24-episode run in April was a sign that BET was wavering on a second season," reports Variety. Thede, the only black late-night talk show host, said of BET's decision: “I’m thankful that BET took a chance on me and the show,” Thede told Variety. “I’m already in development on several other projects and I’m looking forward to hosting the TCA Awards on August 4.” ALSO: Thede tweets thanks to "all of YOU. Except Ben Carson."

Amber Ruffin: Bill Maher, "go f*ck yourself"
The Late Night writer/performer, in her monologue as host of the Writers Guild Awards last night, praised her boss Seth Meyers as "the first woke late-night host" and called BET host Robin Thede "the most woke late-night host." She also name-dropped Jordan Klepper and John Oliver for also being "woke." As for Bill Maher? He can go "f*ck himself," she said.

Robin Thede’s The Rundown is “Black Twitter personified within the late-night mold”
The former head writer on Larry Wilmore’s Nightly Show “takes from that familiar, white male–dominated genre and serves it up through a biting, unmistakably black lens” on her weekly BET show, says Aisha Harris. She points to one segment where Thede took on the topic of black Trump supporters with the seriousness of John Oliver and Samantha Bee.

Robin Thede’s BET talk show The Rundown “is a late-night show for a generation that’s tired of white men doing the same thing every night”

Thede transitioned seamlessly from being head writer on Larry Wilmore's The Nightly Show 14 months ago to helming her own talk show on Thursday night, becoming the first black woman in late-night since 2011. “Her reactions are sharp and gif-able,” says Ashley Ray-Harris. “The segments are compact and informational; ready to be consumed in your news feed the next day. Instead of feeling like a desperate reach at relevance, it feels realistic. Thede knows that’s exactly where her audience is going to see this content; not on a TV with cable with commercials.
