Are you a Sons of Anarchy fan who can't get into Mayans MC?
Source: TV Guide
The Sons of Anarchy spinoff is missing the emotional component that made the original Kurt Sutter biker gang series so appealing, says Kaitlin Thomas. "Although the two shows obviously share DNA, and although there's nothing about Mayans MC that I actively dislike, I struggle to find myself interested in its many interconnected storylines," she says. "Sons of Anarchy eased viewers into its dangerous, violent world while taking the time to also dig into Jax's conflicting emotions about SAMCRO and fatherhood, all while slowly laying the groundwork for overarching storylines, like the hints about Clay (Ron Perlman) and Gemma's involvement in JT's death. But Mayans MC jumped in head first assuming most viewers are Sons fans already familiar with the world and how these motorcycle clubs operate. And while that's probably true — I'm not sure Mayans MC is attracting a lot of new fans — it's still been too much all at once."

Mayans MC is too much of the same stuff from Sons of Anarchy with different names
Source: Rolling Stone
"There are occasional playful flourishes, like the way the show signals the start of each flashback to EZ’s days as a clean-cut student dating Emily (Sarah Bolger), but otherwise it’s the same stuff, different names," says Alan Sepinwall. "(The Galindo cartel was a key part of Sons, too, but here it assumes the plot function of the manipulative Irish gun runners who funded SAMCRO.) That it’s a Latino group that gets mixed up with hot-button issues on both sides of the border offers some new shading, but that material largely takes a backseat to the same old plot moves. It’s a spin-off likely to be better received by people who didn’t watch the original."
- Mayans MC feels like the product of research, rather than lived experience
- Mayans MC is a "strange blast": "It ain’t Shakespeare, but it is salient and thrillingly confident in its storytelling"
- It doesn't fully make the case this was the spinoff Sons of Anarchy needed or demanded
- Mayans MC seems less interested in exploring timely sociopolitical themes -- it's more of a throwback than a spinoff
- Watching Mayans MC for the first time felt a lot like watching Sons of Anarchy for the first time
- It is too much like the bad late seasons of Sons of Anarchy
- There's a lot riding on Mayans MC -- it has to live up to the best years of Sons of Anarchy
- How to watch Mayans MC without having seen Sons of Anarchy
- JD Pardo had difficulty learning to ride a Harley
- Edward James Olmos was drawn to Mayans MC because it delved into the subtext of the characters' lives
- Kurt Sutter insists Mayans MC is not a political show: "I had to step away and realize that if I'm not going to let externals dictate how I tell stories, I can't do it in reverse either"

Kurt Sutter looks back at launching Sons of Anarchy as it celebrates its 10th anniversary
The FX biker drama premiered on Sept. 3, 2008. Having come from writing for The Shield, Sutter says the evolution of the show was intertwined with his creative growth. "The stuff that I learned on Sons, the education of how to tell stories, was part of that mythology,” he says. “It’s hard to look at it and go, ‘Oh, if I knew this, I would have done it this way,’ because the fact is I like to think that all that sort of unraveled as it was supposed to. And not just in terms of story, but in terms of where I was at and the creatives I surrounded myself with.”

Charlie Hunnam would never reprise his Sons of Anarchy role because "he sort of became sacred to me"
“No, no… I had the deepest experience of my career coming out of that,” Hunnam when asked of reprising Jax Teller on Mayans MC. “I had become that character, had become so deeply integrated into who I was, I literally didn’t realize until the day we wrapped and we put him to rest and I felt I went through a period of two or three weeks of, like, real bereavement.”

Mayans M.C. to show Sons of Anarchy characters in flashback scenes

But don't expect the Mayans members to talk about Jax. “I don’t want to mess with that mythology,” Kurt Sutter says of Sons of Anarchy. “That mythology can live in imagination. But flashbacks wouldn’t be stepping on what is happening now.” ALSO: Mayans M.C. might feature Jax's son Abel.

Kurt Sutter: Mayans M.C. will eventually intersect with Son of Anarchy, but he wants to keep the spinoff "sacred" for now
“I want to acknowledge that world and find opportunities to circle that, but I don’t want to abuse it,” Sutter said at Comic-Con, later joking: “Season 4, everything is up for grabs." ALSO: Sutter gets to do a flashback on Mayans M.C., which he never did on Sons of Anarchy.

Sons of Anarchy is being blamed for the rise of motorcycle gangs in Canada
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are blaming the FX series for the rise in biker gangs in Nova Scotia. “I can tell you that it’s growing, ever since the phenomenon of Sons of Anarchy,” Constable Scott Morrison said during a recent presentation. “Where that television show has seemed to almost socialize outlaw motorcycle gang life, more people want to join that life, think it’s a brotherhood, think the camaraderie is there, based on the television show, and they’re joining up.” ALSO: Mayans M.C.'s new trailer features the grave of Jax Teller.

Sons of Anarchy's Kurt Sutter adds his voice to Fox creators denouncing Fox News
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
Sutter, who executive produces Mayans MC for FX and 20th Century Fox subsidiary Fox21, says of Fox News and its coverage of President Trump's child separation policy: "The political decision made by this administration was heinous. But I don’t consider what Fox airs as 'news.' It’s manipulative propaganda, run by oligarchs, delivered by puppets, to control the fearful. What I do with FX and Fox 21 is not influenced by that energy. Yes, we are all owed by the parent company, but contrarily, at FX, other artists and myself are given the freedom to tell stories that address real issues in a truthful way. I guess we just learn to live with the sad irony that our fiction is more truthful than Fox News’ facts."

Kurt Sutter doesn't want Mayans MC to be a Latino version of Sons of Anarchy
“My job is to transition the mythology from Sons and honor that,” Sutter said at the ATX Television Festival. “We want to acknowledge where we came from and those fans and balance that with a show that’s original and different and doesn’t feel like a Latino version of Sons of Anarchy.“ He added: “I knew a white a guy from jersey shouldn’t be writing about the Latino culture." ALSO: Mayans MC has been in the works since Season 3 or Season 4 of Sons of Anarchy.
