ABC picks up Station 19 for a full season
While ABC didn't give an exact number, the Grey's Anatomy spinoff is expected to add an additional nine episodes, bringing its Season 2 total to 22 episodes. Station 19 aired 10 episodes in its first season. The pickup comes on the heels of Station 19 going from a series high last week to a series low last night because it didn't have a Grey's Anatomy lead-in. Instead, Station 19 was preceded by It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and Toy Story of Terror! as its lead-in, resulting in a 37% viewership plunge from the previous week.

Station 19 excels by toning down the excesses of past Shondaland shows
"Station 19 offers a distinctly Shondaland twist on the fire station drama, without resorting to the gimmicks of Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, or the latest attempt For the People," says Sonia Saraiya. "The new drama dials down the heightened emotions and quicksilver banter that are hallmarks of the Rhimes brand for a sturdier, subtler story. Because this is a Shondaland show, the back half of the pilot does feature an attractive couple getting naked with each other. But at least Station 19 feels more like a show about characters than a sizzle reel designed to evoke a mood, which places it a cut above the competition."
- Shondaland shows usually feel real and relatable (despite the absurdity) but Station 19 feels less authentic
- It feels too much like a crossover: "Chicago Fire already does this show and does it well"
- Station 19 creator Stacy McKee says the existance of Chicago Fire was never a concern
- Shonda Rhimes didn't set up any ground rules for McKee
- What Station 19 could learn from Private Practice, the first Grey's spinoff
