But ever since The Magicians premiered its third season last month, the Syfy series has been allowed to say the F-word as often as it wants. “ATTENTION #THEMAGICIANS FANS: Know how we’ve had to dip audio? And you gotta wait for the @netflix version to fully honor the rainbow of ways Penny says “F***CK”?” tweeted co-creator Sera Gamble. “DONE with that. SEASON 3 IS UNCENSORED. Syfy’s Happy! is the perfect antidote to holiday overkill
"Happy! is not expressly a holiday treat, despite its setting, in the same way that (Christopher Meloni’s) Nick is not a Grinch,” says Melanie McFarland. “He harbors the same regard for the season as he does about everything else — which is to say, none whatsoever. This liberates the serialized adaptation of Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson’s graphic novel to maintain the same kind of reality-defying savagery that's illustrated on the page, while capitalizing on Meloni’s undeniable charm. The former Law & Order: SVU star is tough to dislike, regardless of the role he’s playing, and that helps make a series devoid of nuance and brimming with extreme violence piled atop even more extreme violence, infinitely more palatable than it would be otherwise.”
- Happy! is kept afloat by Meloni’s performance, but remains an acquired, specific taste
- This brand of “TV-MA bubblegum noir” is no longer appealing
- Meloni tries to hold things together, but his role is drowned out by the show’s “empty edginess”
- Meloni talks about his journey from SVU to comedies to Happy!
