12 Monkeys departs with one of the best-ever series finales
"The finale paid off every idea the show ever had about itself, curlicue revelations sprinkled alongside brawly catharsis," says Darren Franich. "It’s one of the most gratifying finales I’ve ever seen, satisfying and surprising, brainy and bighearted. Like the best finales, it was partly about the need for finality." He adds: "I’ll miss this show’s peculiar thrills, the twirling imagination of its time travel narrative physics, how it honored perspectives on fate and free will without ever getting bogged down in mawkish monologuing. It was existential pop, cheerful heroes regarding the void with dark humor. Everyone died a few times, but you’ve never met such friendly ghosts. The cycle has ended; can’t wait for it to start again."

Why The Expanse's Season 3 was its best yet
"The Expanse writers have taken a creative approach to adapting the James S.A. Corey novel series," says Cheryl Eddy, "foregoing what would seem like the expected 'one book per season' structure. The fact that season three stretched across two books was definitely obvious, but it didn’t take away from the enjoyment of the series. It just meant that we got six very solid episodes that tied up much of the drama that consumed seasons one and two—and then, in a choice that felt completely natural, jumped ahead several months for a total recharge (and seven more equally solid episodes). Instead of spending any time dithering around, guiding characters toward the next exciting point in the story, The Expanse quickly dove right back into the action, fully trusting that its viewers would be able to keep up." ALSO: The Expanse proved to be TV's best sci-fi series.

Report: Amazon is "near" a deal to save The Expanse

That's according to The Hollywood Reporter's Lesley Goldberg, who emphasizes that a deal isn't yet done. She adds that, according to sources, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos "is a big fan of the book and was livid that the TV series went to NBCUniversal-owned Syfy. That loss move is said to have ignited Bezos' demand that Amazon Studios brass find TV's next Game of Thrones. Last Tuesday, heartbroken The Expanse fans flew a banner over Amazon Studios headquarters in Los Angeles with the hashtag "#SaveTheExpanse."

Syfy cancels The Expanse after three seasons
The Expanse was one of the first series greenlighted following Syfy's decision to return to its sweeping space opera roots. According to Deadline, producers plan to shop the series to another outlet. "The cancellation decision by Syfy is said to be linked to the nature of its agreement for the series, which only gives the cable network first-run linear rights in the U.S," according to Deadline's Nellie Andreeva. "That puts an extraordinary amount of emphasis on live, linear viewing, which is inherently challenging for sci-fi/genre series that tend to draw the lion’s share of their audiences from digital/streaming."
