The Meghan Markle-Prince Harry specials have been terrible
"Avoid all of these shows," Margaret Lyons says after watching seven of them, from TLC's When Harry Met Meghan: A Royal Engagement to Lifetime's Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance to CBS' Meghan Markle: American Princess. "The convergence of history, celebrity and glamour should be a fertile area for one-off TV specials, and there’s plenty of genuine information — about rituals, about rites, about politics, about tiaras, about dads — worth acknowledging or exploring," says Lyons. "Also, come on: Weddings are fun! At times, these shows are giddy and fizzy and dorky, and I learned a few historical tidbits along the way. But the claims to personal intimacy ranged from visibly untrue to quietly sad, and the shows all used many of the same talking heads, the same clips and the same dumb, dubious claims (no, Suits is not a celebrity-making show). A boring tabloid is a sin. Worse, the contrived narrative that the shows collectively push — the idea that Harry and Meghan’s romance is 'a fairy tale' — is jarringly backward."

Paige Davis attributes Trading Spaces' big ratings to the show being "comfort food" in our "scary time"
Davis said the original Trading Spaces took off after the 9/11 attacks, and she's seeing parallels between then and now. “It doesn’t matter what side of the aisle you fall on, it’s kind of a scary time," she tells The New York Observer, which is owned by President Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner. "We’re at odds with each other so everybody wants something that’s comfortable—like food. What do you do when you’re not feeling great—you have mac and cheese, that’s what you do. So, we’re like that comfort food that you go back to.”

Trading Spaces ditches the sadness with a kinder, gentler revival
As Kate Dries points out, it seems TLC sent an edict that the reboot of its classic home makeover reality show stop being brutal, as viewers prefer watching home makeover reality stars be nice nowadays. The change in attitude, says Dries, reflects the nature of the current makeover reality show landscape, which she says has "settled into a comfortable rhythm since Trading Spaces was last on the air. Characters are known and loved, and people getting upset because of the outcome of their living spaces is not en vogue. Some of the highest-rated shows on HGTV include Fixer Upper, Property Brothers, and Flip or Flop -- programs in which the drama comes from the ribbing between the ones making the houses look great, and from having to adapt to things not working out as they’ve planned, not in the homeowners being disappointed. The focus is on anyone being able to have their dream scenario, not on getting one’s hopes up, only to have them crushed. In this way, the new Trading Spaces ... seems perfectly suited to come back as a slightly tweaked version of its past selves, most of the sadness removed, all of the fun remaining."
