TV news played it safe on election night until Fox News declared Democrats' House victory
Source: The New York Times
NBC News, CNN, ABC News and other news outlets seemed wary of declaring victory for the Democrats in retaking the House of Representatives. "Then blue-state redemption arrived from an unlikely source: Fox News," reports The New York Times. "In an aggressive call on a night when many television networks played it safe, Fox News was the first major news organization to project that the Democrats would retake control of the House of Representatives, dealing a blow to the channel’s most famous viewer, President Trump...About 50 minutes after Fox News’ call, NBC News followed suit. CNN did not weigh in with a definitive projection on the House until 11 p.m." This year, the Big Three broadcast networks devoted much more time to covering the midterms. As The Times notes, "ABC, CBS and NBC allotted a supersize block of time — three hours in prime time — to feed viewers’ appetite for political news. Usually, midterms only merit an hour of coverage on the Big Three broadcast stations, usually starting at 10 p.m. Cable news networks, whose ratings now regularly beat rival channels like ESPN, constructed glossy new sets for the occasion; Fox News, for instance, built a hub outside its studio on Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan."

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog mocks Ted Cruz to his face while reporting for Stephen Colbert

Since Conan O'Brien is on a late-night hiatus, he loaned Triumph to The Late Show to cover the Texas U.S. Senate battle between Cruz and Beto O’Rourke. While Triumph was easy on the Democrat candidate, he had quite a few barbs for Cruz, whom he "stalked" nearly three years ago when the U.S. senator was running for president. “Ted, is it true you will defend the Constitution at all costs except for when Donald Trump calls it ugly on Twitter?” Triumph said, referencing President Trump's tweet making fun of Cruz's wife's looks. “Let’s be civil here, OK, because this man—nobody should be yelling at this man in a public place,” Triumph added. “I mean, doesn’t this man have the right to sit down in a restaurant and enjoy a meal that five waiters have spit in?” Cruz responded by saying that it was the Democrats who took him to get fixed. Triumph shot back, “I support spaying and neutering, just like Trump did to you!”

"The Democrats are the party of Lisa Simpson and Republicans are happily the party of Homer, Bart, Maggie and Marge," the U.S. senator from Texas -- who once "auditioned" for The Simpsons -- said today of the Fox animated comedy at the Conservative Political Action Conference. The Simpsons showrunner Al Jean responded on Twitter: "Ted Cruz says Maggie Simpson would vote for him. I think Ted's the one who could use a pacifier in his mouth." Jean added: "The way things are going even Mr. Burns is thinking of becoming a Democrat." In an interview with The Wrap, Jean said, "If I was Ted Cruz, I wouldn’t be so quick to write off Lisa’s vote. I think she’s an important person with a lot of intelligence and you’d really want to win her over and not just abandon her.”As an MSNBC producer pointed out, The Simpsons once portrayed Lisa Simpson as becoming president and inheriting a President Trump budget crisis long before the president entered politics.
