The Fosters co-creator: We didn't want to do the Downton Abbey series finale

"These are messy real people on messy real journeys, and those journeys don’t always run parallel," says executive producer and co-creator Peter Paige. He adds: "We got a little less political, a little more into the relationships and who these people were becoming in their adult lives. It was nice to be able to check in with all of them and see how they were making it on the road to adulthood. We wanted to create stories where there would be organic reasons to remind us how far we’ve come, where, in moving forward, we would naturally look back."

They all revolve around cross-racial adoption, says Emily Nussbaum. "On Here and Now and This Is Us, cross-racial adoption feels suspiciously like a structural shortcut to a diverse cast," she says. The Fosters stars recall the roller coaster of emotions going from cancelation to spinoff
Maia Mitchell and Cierra Ramirez are excited that their characters, Callie and Mariana, will live on in a Los Angeles-based spinoff. “We found out the show was ending,” says Mitchell, “and they were like, ‘Do you want to keep the story alive?’ We were like, ‘Yeah, in whatever way we can. Let’s figure it out.’ They came up with a way for us to do that. There are going to be appearances from all your Fosters favorites, so it’s not just going to be our show. There are going to be new series regulars and new characters, and still the same amount of representation as we’ve had on The Fosters, and the same topics. It’s (the) same but different.”
