Tom Cruise releases a video explaining the scourge of "Motion Smoothing" on HDTV sets
Cruise and Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie released a special video on the actor's Twitter explaining motion smoothing, AKA "the soap opera effect," which is designed to reduce blur in high-motion video like sports. The problem is motion smoothing makes movies look choppy and terrible. Yet many TV owners don't know this because motion smoothing is automatically turned on. Cruise and McQuarrie explained how to turn the feature off.

Jack Reacher may be headed to TV with an actor "more imposing" than Tom Cruise
Lee Child, whose Jack Reacher novels were adapted for two Tom Cruise movies, says he's signed a deal to adapt his novels for the small screen. Child says that Cruise, who starred in 2012's Jack Reacher and 2016's Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, won't reprise his role as a nomadic former U.S. Army major and won't star in the potential TV series. Child says he wants the TV Jack Reacher to be more like the imposing, burly character from his books. “Cruise, for all his talent, didn’t have that physicality,” Child tells BBC News. "I really enjoyed working with Cruise. He’s a really, really nice guy. We had a lot of fun. But ultimately the readers are right. The size of Reacher is really, really important and it’s a big component of who he is… So what I’ve decided to do is – there won’t be any more movies with Tom Cruise. Instead we’re going to take it to Netflix or something like that. Long-form streaming television, with a completely new actor.” He adds: “We’re rebooting and starting over and we’re going to try and find the perfect guy.” The proposed Jack Reacher series will be pitched to networks and streaming services.

Tom Cruise needs a career reboot: Why not try TV?
Source: Entertainment Weekly
“Maybe just a little dip into the waters of Netflix?” says Tim Stack. “Or a brief stay trip to HBO? I’m not saying he should be the lead of NCIS: Weehawken. TV takes so many forms now but a limited series would be the best choice IMO. I would love to see him work with someone like Noah Hawley or Ryan Murphy or Damon Lindelof — someone who could take him out of his action-hero comfort zone and showcase his skills. Maybe even play an anti-hero. Some of my favorite Cruise roles were when he wasn’t likable, like in Magnolia or Interview with the Vampire. How great would Cruise be in an American Crime Story season? Or even a new Fargo installment? Or True Detective 3?”

Why Conan’s “boring” car ride with Tom Cruise was so hilarious
Conan O’Brien and Tom Cruise poked fun at car-based programming like Carpool Karaoke and Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee with their dull, 11-minute segment. “It’s an aggressively boring clip that goes on for way too long, which is exactly what makes it so funny,” says Constance Grady. “If Carpool Karaoke exists in a mystical fantasy world where every car ride is the greatest road trip montage ever filmed, full of beautiful people belting out their favorite songs in their gorgeous professional-musician voices while the wind blows through their hair, then Conan’s ‘just drive’ segment exists in the nightmare world of the worst-case-scenario road trip.”
