Why new Magnum P.I. Jay Hernandez doesn't have a mustache: "No one is going to replace Tom Selleck"
The mustache-free Thomas Magnum has been buzzed about since the first image of Hernandez on the Magnum P.I. reboot was released. At CBS' upfronts on Wednesday, Hernandez explained why he's not sporting a mustache. "No one is going to replace Tom Selleck," Hernandez told TV Guide. "You can't do that. You gotta sorta reinvent it, take what works from the original show and sort of make it new so that's what we did." He added: "Just wait! Watch the show, there might be something that people who need the mustache might feel satisfied with." In reviewing the new Magnum P.I. trailer, critic Daniel Fienberg said Thomas Magnum without the mustache doesn't feel like Magnum P.I. "I've got no objections at all to Jay Hernandez as Magnum, but without a mustache or conspicuous chest hair, nothing about him instantly screams 'Magnum!'" he says. Meanwhile, Vincent Boucher asks: "Will a Magnum sans his mustache really have what it takes?" He adds that a mustache in 2018 may be seen as "too ironic, too Brooklyn hipster." TV mustaches, he points out, have also been associated with Milo Ventimiglia's tragic This Is Us character and James Franco's dark The Deuce characters. "For now, we can only hope some kind of hairline storyline makes the cut," says Boucher.

Can the Magnum P.I. reboot work without a mustache?
Tom Selleck became an icon wearing a mustache and Hawaiian shirts. Yet Jay Hernandez is sporting neither in promos for the CBS revival series. "Will a Magnum sans his mustache really have what it takes?" asks Vincent Boucher. "Much like Samson who lost his godly abilities when shorn of his lengthy locks, will the new iteration of the TV folk hero still have the power to keep the people tuned in without his bro-mo? We'll have to wait until this fall to find out. For now, we can only hope some kind of hairline storyline makes the cut."

Tom Selleck pays tribute to Magnum P.I. co-star John Hillerman
Selleck recalled a funny story about his “regular guy” friend Hillerman: “I would go around London in a cab, and they'd ask, ‘Where's the Brit, John Hillerman, from on your show?’ and I'd tell them he was from Denison, Texas. The Brits are always good at spotting funny British accents in shows, and they all thought John was British.”

CBS is planning a Magnum P.I. reboot with the producer who revived Hawaii Five-0 and MacGyver
Producer Peter Lenkov is being asked again to revive another classic TV series, this one based on the 1980s Tom Selleck Hawaii-set drama. With CBS spending big bucks on the pilot, the updated version of Magnum P.I. follows Thomas Magnum as a former Navy SEAL (like the original series) who returns home from Afghanistan and uses his skills as a private investigator. Selleck isn’t attached to the reboot. But since he’s already connected to CBS via Blue Bloods, it wouldn’t be surprising if he made a cameo. ALSO: ABC tried a female Magnum P.I. sequel last year.
