MTV says it isn't canceling TRL reboot, it's expanding it
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
MTV president Chris McCarthy responded to TMZ's report this afternoon that the reboot of Total Request Live had been canceled by announcing that, in fact, TRL is sticking around and will be expanding to morning and late-night editions. "It's thriving," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "We're expanding the franchise and will have three TRLs by summer," He added: "TRL has delivered incredible growth on linear and we've experienced two to three times the growth in our video streams and TRL is big piece of it — and that's why we're expanding it; we want more." The late-night edition will launch in the summer, airing four nights a week and serve as somewhat of an "after-show" to MTV's primetime programming. Total Request A.M. will air without commercials as a curated Spotify playlist with a traditional video countdown and performances.

Stephen Colbert grilled Ben Affleck on Harvey Weinstein and TRL groping of Hilarie Burton
Source: Entertainment Weekly
“What I was accused of by a woman was of touching her breast while I gave her a hug,” Affleck said last night's Late Show. “I don’t remember it, but I absolutely apologized for it. I certainly don’t think she’s lying or making it up. It’s just the kind of thing that we have to as men, I think, as we become more aware of this, be really, really mindful of our behavior and hold ourselves accountable and say, ‘If I was ever part of the problem, I want to change.”

MTV’s rebooted TRL still hasn't gotten its act together in Week 4
Source: The New York Times
TRL’s problems stem, in part, from hiring internet stars as hosts who aren’t up to the task and for not figuring out its place in a social media world. “The TRL of 2017 is less a coherent show than a series of loosely threaded distractions,” says Jon Caramanica. “Each episode is an hour but feels like two. It is preoccupied with viral moments but creates none of its own, or barely anything even worth a GIF.” He adds: “Unforced errors abound, including oodles of technical hiccups: sloppy camerawork, dead air, missed cues.”

Jeffrey Dean Morgan reacts to Ben Affleck’s apology for groping wife Hilarie Burton years ago on TRL

The Walking Dead star says: “I don’t want to make a big deal of it because she didn’t, but I think everything that’s come out in the last couple of weeks, starting with Harvey Weinstein — anybody who has talked about it and even those who haven’t yet are incredibly brave and I think it’s time for change. Hopefully all this stuff is going to change this business. It’s prevalent all over and I’m proud of all these women. All women and my wife.”

Carson Daly is baffled MTV proceeded with launching the TRL reboot so soon after the Las Vegas tragedy
“Well, they’re going to postpone the launch after the tragedy that just happened, especially with it being at a concert,” Daly thought. “How are they going to launch a happy go-lucky video show?” The Voice host has yet to watch the reboot, but he says MTV has a “tough task” ahead because “the world has changed so much, especially in the consumption of music and technology and the internet and smartphones. “You were stuck watching me, *NSYNC and Kid Rock back then because we were the only show in town. You know? It was like American Bandstand. Now, you don’t have to do that anymore.” ALSO: TRL doesn’t know what it wants to be in 2017.

MTV’s TRL revival had a bad debut, made worse in wake of the Las Vegas tragedy
Source: The Daily Beast
There are no requests or music videos on this new iteration of TRL. Add to that the awkwardness of having to do a high-energy show in the wake of a horrible tragedy. “The frantic hour was the television equivalent of a strobe light,” says Kevin Fallon, “blinding viewers with nanosecond content that its unseasoned hosts couldn’t manage to keep up with, let alone anyone watching at home: A performance! Now 10 seconds of an interview! A game! A prayer! Back to the interview! Out to Times Square! Just kidding, back to the studio! A viral video! Ed Sheeran! Twerk on strangers! Should we do another prayer? The premiere of this new, social-media age TRL unveiled a MTV populated by Vine stars, where music videos are watched on YouTube, and in which the teenagers in the TRL audience are experts at contouring and fashionable enough to star in their own videos—a far cry from the constellation of acne, rat’s nest of braces, and factory of Abercrombie t-shirts that defined the O.G. TRL aesthetic.”

MTV’s rebooted TRL would gladly welcome President Trump on the show
Source: The Fader
TRL showrunner Albert Lewitinn has been receiving some flak for hedging when asked about hyping artists who have abused women and for saying he’d welcome the president. “He's welcome to hashtag us and @ TRL,” says Lewitinn. “He's the president of the United States. Of course we would welcome him on. He's the president of the United States.”
