Court TV is making a comeback
The trial-focused cable channel that launched in 1991 and thrived in the mid-1990s amid the O.J. Simpson and Menendez Brothers murder trials was rebranded as truTV in 2008. According to Deadline, "Katz Networks, a unit of the E.W. Scripps Co. which operates multicast networks like Bounce, Escape and Grit, will relaunch Court TV in May 2019. Just as it did when it was owned by Turner Broadcasting, the network will be devoted to live, gavel-to-gavel coverage, legal reporting and expert analysis of trials across the country."

“We’ve got five writers, five researchers, a head writer, a head researcher, a couple executive producers and me,” Adam Conover says of his truTV series, which returned Tuesday for Season 3. “These are very smart people who are reading, learning things, watching documentaries, listening to podcasts, reading the newspaper. They’re ingesting information all day long, and I want them to think back—what is something you learned recently that blew your fucking mind, something that you thought was a truly remarkable fact. Anything that will make the whole room go ‘Holy sh*t! Really!?’ That right there is the bar for a Truly Remarkable Fact.”

Gethard announced via Twitter and Facebook that, after seven years on various outlets, his talk show is ending one year after debuting on truTV. "Some executives from truTV sat me down a few weeks after this most recent batch of episodes and said, 'We’re getting the sense from your final speech, and from some of our behind the scenes conversations, that you might be done with this project," he wrote. "I told them they were right. So, it’s a mutual decision. We were after all, the lowest rated show on the network, something that I take no small amount of pride in."

This Is Us is proof that TV is terrible at portraying overweight people
Comedian Guy Branum, host of truTV's Talk Show the Game Show, tackles the problematic portrayal of overweight people on TV and in pop-culture in his new memoir, My Life As a Goddess: A Memoir Through (Un)Popular Culture. As he points out, Chrissy Metz's character Kate can't be seen as content with her life unless she's losing weight. "Kate, the fat sister on NBC’s This Is Us, is a fictionalized version of a Biggest Loser competitor," Branum writes. "She has no qualities. She’s thirty-seven years old and is wholly devoid of skills or passions other than kind of liking singing. While one of her brothers earned a graduate degree and the other bounced between acting jobs, Kate did nothing of note or merit. We can assume her time was spent romancing wheels of Camembert and being too scared to talk to a boy because she knows she’s too fat to be loved. Have any of these people met a fat girl? A real Kate, in the real world, would be awesome. She’d have tons of gay friends and go to drag bingo a lot. She’d have learned to be fearless with fashion, because people are going to judge her anyway. She’d have a joke to make when she’s too sweaty. She’d have broken a chair before, and she’d know what to do when it happens the second time. Chrissy Metz gives great soul to the character, but as she’s written, Kate is a cul-de-sac of a human being who has tasted nothing of the world except cheesy fries. That ain’t any of the fat bitches I know. The reason the writers of This Is Us cannot imagine Kate doing anything valuable is because her existence as a fat person means she is doing things that are unvaluable. If Kate is fat, she cannot have been journeying toward unfatness with all of her power ... Happiness and success are there for Kate, but only in her future, only as part of her narrative of losing fat, and only if she doesn’t fail. And we need fat people to fail. We need them to be so dumb and lacking in willpower that said salvation is never actually achieved. We need to know that their immorality is inherent so we can believe our own thin morality is inherent." (Disclosure: Guy Branum and I worked on our college newspaper at the same time when the Secret Service visited him, but we barely knew each other then and don't know each other now.)

TruTV's Bobcat Goldthwait's Misfits & Monsters is a hit or miss anthology series with a lot of potential
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
"Misfits & Monsters is a predictably hit-and-miss mixture of amusingly bizarre, strangely inspired and interestingly misfired with a lot of potential to grow and evolve," says Daniel Fienberg of the anthology series premiering Wednesday. He adds: "The reality is that this format is perfect for what is so superficially amusing about Goldthwait's worldview, but it isn't all that well-suited for what he actually does best, which is starting a story in a place of near-grotesquerie and mining unexpected humanity out of the muck. What's so impressive about Goldthwait's film work, and also what makes it such an inquired taste, is that you begin his movies in a place of discomfort and general unpleasantness and end in places of unexpected emotion and sometimes even hope."

The Problem with Apu's Hari Kondabolu: "Matt Groening finally responded & sounds like every other troll on the internet who didn’t see the documentary"
The Simpsons creator told USA Today last week when asked about the Apu controversy, "I think it’s a time in our culture where people love to pretend they’re offended." Kondabolu responded to Groening's comment, tweeting: "Well, that seals it. Matt Groening finally responded & sounds like every other troll on the internet who didn’t see the documentary. No one is offended by this character. It was, at times, insulting & was frustrating to many of us who were solely represented by that one image." ALSO: Groening's remark is "the height of willful ignorance."
